My go-to approach for treating depression is using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tools in sessions. I find CBT beneficial for treating depression since it helps to examine the thoughts often behind the depressed feelings and explores how worries and fears play a role in those feelings. These tools also help to explore specific strategies to recognize depressed thoughts more effectively and challenge these thoughts.
I use a variety of tools when helping clients to work on their depression. Here are some examples of tools or coping strategies that I'll utilize:
I know a client is making meaningful progress when they report that the coping strategies they've been learning are helping them feel more positive, lighter, or more motivated. When clients share that they are feeling more at ease not always due to their depression going away completely, but feeling confident in their ability to manage the depression and state that they feel control over their depression, not that the depression is taking control of them.
Clients can supplement their time in depression counseling by practicing more self-care and giving their minds time to rest and feel content with being in the moment. This can include a variety of activities, such as engaging in hobbies, practicing journaling exercises, exercising, or using meditations.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can identify some of the triggers for your depression and how it has been affecting your life. For example, some triggers may be: stress within the workplace, changes in my family, health problems, or grief/loss. Examples of how the depression is affecting you may be:

Depression is a battle that many Americans fight every day. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that you may share the same fight with so many others—and often the first step is to reach out for assistance.

Depression counseling is a specialized set of therapeutic approaches that seeks to minimize and help manage the short- and long-term effects of depressive symptoms and disorders.
Though depression is somewhat common, it affects each person differently. Some people feel depressed from time to time, going back and forth between emotional highs and lows, while others struggle with a persistent depressive disorder that never seems to go away. Here are some of the most common symptoms that depression therapy can assist in treating:
If any of these apply to you, whether they are minor feelings or they are issues that are slowly taking control over your life, seeing a mental health professional at Thriveworks in Paramus, NJ could help you bring stability and fulfillment back to your life.
The treatment of depression at Thriveworks in Paramus, New Jersey involves a multi-faceted approach that is geared to meet your needs. Counseling sessions with a mental health professional will help you to examine possible triggers for your depression.
For example, you may learn cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) strategies you can use to give yourself an emotional boost, like embracing a healthy lifestyle and learning how to better connect with those around you. Medication may also be important in successfully treating your depression, but it’s not a “magic fix”—and often works best with therapy, too.
The most important thing you need to remember is there is no shame in having a mental illness. You wouldn’t feel guilty or self-conscious over catching the flu or battling cancer, so you shouldn’t feel embarrassed to seek help for your symptoms of depression, either.
If you are struggling with depression, your journey to feeling better can begin with an appointment at Thriveworks in Paramus, New Jersey. Our mental health counselors understand mood disorder symptoms and how overwhelming they can be. They are here to help you find a way to pick yourself up again.
