My go-to approach for treating anxiety is using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tools in sessions. I find CBT to be beneficial for treating anxiety, since it helps to examine the thoughts that are often behind the anxious feelings and explore how your worries and fears play a role in your feelings. These tools also explore specific strategies to recognize anxious thoughts more effectively, and how to challenge these thoughts to help clients feel less anxious!
I use a variety of tools when helping clients to work on their anxiety. Here are some examples of tools or coping strategies that I'll utilize:
I know a client is making meaningful progress when they report that the coping strategies they've been learning are helping them feel a better sense of direction with how to calm their mind. I also see it when clients share that they are feeling more at ease — their anxiety hasn't gone away completely, but they feel confident in their ability to manage the anxiety and state that they feel control over the anxiety, not that the anxiety is taking control of them.
Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy by practicing more self-care and giving their minds time to rest and feel content with being in the moment. This can include a variety of activities, such as engaging in hobbies, practicing journaling exercises, exercising, or using meditations.
To prepare for your first anxiety therapy session, you can identify some of the triggers for your anxiety and how the anxiety has been affecting your life. For example, some triggers may be stress within the workplace, changes in one's family, fears about health, and/or worries about the future. Examples of how the anxiety is affecting you may be that you're not sleeping as well, you're feeling more on edge, your mind feels like it's constantly going and it never stops, you're shaking/sweating/feeling hot, and/or you're panicking more. Any background information will really help your therapist determine a plan for how they can best support you as you start your anxiety therapy!
Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Paramus, NJ can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.
Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Paramus therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.
One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.
Common symptoms of anxiety include:
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.
Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.
On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.
