About
I believe healing happens in relationships, and I am committed to creating an LGBTQIA+ affirming space where you feel seen, safe, and empowered to navigate identity, life transitions, and emotional pain with hope and support.
I am Dr. Benjamin T. Finlayson, PhD, LMFT-S, a relational and couples therapist specializing in LGBTQIA+ affirming care. I work with individuals, couples, and families navigating relationship challenges, communication difficulties, identity exploration, and life transitions. My clients often seek deeper connection, stronger communication, and practical tools to build healthier, more satisfying relationships while feeling truly understood and supported in therapy.
I use evidence-based methods including EFT, SFBT, and relational approaches to support clients through relationship growth, conflict resolution, identity exploration, career and family transitions, and personal enrichment. Clients can expect practical tools, compassionate guidance, and strategies to foster meaningful, lasting change.
Seeking support can feel challenging, but you don't have to navigate it alone. I am committed to creating a safe, affirming space where you feel seen and valued. When you're ready, I welcome the opportunity to support you in deepening connection, enhancing communication, and cultivating fulfilling relationships.

My go-to approach for helping people in couples/marriage counseling is through collaboration and healthy listening. I find the best benefit in helping couples express themselves in a healthy way and feel heard and responded to appropriately so that they feel their needs are being attended to and their feelings are important.
I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling: self-expression, healthy listening, empathy, relatability, de-escalation, anger management, intimacy, understanding, parenting skills, etc.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling when their symptoms are no longer interfering with their day-to-day functioning.
Clients can supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling through conversations with their partner, talking with support systems, journaling, exercising, meditation, yoga, etc.
To prepare for your first couples/marriage counseling session, you can think about the problem from each person's perspective, how the problem came to be, how you would like to see it resolved, and how you can compromise in this solution.
Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:
Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

Healthy love bonds are hard enough to maintain without complicating factors like raising children, juggling careers, dealing with health issues, or managing finances–which are stressful enough on their own. Why not ask for help when you need it?
