Now I am in a position where I can employ that knowledge and experience in the application of therapy to support clients as they find their innate strength and overcome challenges. Read more

What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people with cognitive behavioral therapy is to explain how their thoughts are connected to their moods. I enjoy seeing people understand this seemingly simple concept and how it works because this concept appears to give hope right from the beginning of treatment.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following tools in cognitive behavioral therapy: journaling and challenging thoughts.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know clients are making meaningful progress in CBT when they tell me how they had a negative feeling, but then explored its roots and realized they had an inaccurate thought or a cognitive distortion. They are able to correct that thought and consequently change their feelings.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their CBT by journaling in their spare time and doing any assigned homework. Clients should know that cognitive behavioral therapy usually has homework or an action plan for the upcoming week.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for their first cognitive behavioral therapy therapy session, clients just have to come with an open mind and be prepared to share. They should realize that this is a safe space and that we need to work together in order to progress in therapy.
