My go-to approach for PTSD treatment is a type of therapy called cognitive processing therapy, or CPT. I find that this type of therapy consistently helps clients have decreased symptoms of depression and anxiety.
With PTSD treatment using cognitive processing therapy, I teach clients how to identify their automatic thoughts, or “stuck points,” so they can challenge those distorted thoughts and hopefully identify a more positive alternative way of thinking.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive processing therapy for PTSD when the weekly data that is collected about their symptoms decreases in severity from week to week.
Clients supplement their time with this type of treatment by doing assigned weekly homework. This homework consists of identifying “stuck points” that pop up in various situations in their lives, writing them down, and going through a process to challenge them, then bringing that homework back to therapy to review.
To prepare for PTSD treatment via cognitive processing therapy, clients should be prepared to do weekly homework for at least 12 weeks.

If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.
The success rate of therapy for PTSD depends entirely on the individual’s symptoms, commitment to attending sessions, and personal abilities.
