My go-to approach for treating grief and loss is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), components of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). I also encourage clients to attend a community grief group. I find optimal benefit by helping clients identify and utilize skills that help them practice non-judgment of their feelings, providing psychoeducation about the process of grief, and assessing for the possibility of depression and/or anxiety.
Some examples of the skills I teach when providing grief and loss counseling are as follows:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief and loss counseling when the frequency and intensity of grief reactions are decreased, as evidenced by their own self-report and my observation of symptoms, and when the client and I are able to identify specific examples of improvement compared to their initial symptomology.
In their personal time, clients can supplement counseling by practicing skills learned in therapy, engaging in agreed-upon activities, reviewing their therapy notes (if any), completing any homework or reading resources shared by the counselor, or keeping track of concerns that arise in between sessions so they remember them for the next session.
To prepare for your first grief and loss counseling session, you should complete any paperwork sent to you ahead of time and come to the session prepared to talk about your symptoms and what you hope to gain overall from your experience in grief and loss counseling.
