As a clinician with 22 years of experience in the mental health field, I understand the unique issues of clients with different personal, ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
Catherine Roberts is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 22 years of experience in the mental health field. She understands the unique issues of clients with different personal, ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
Catherine enjoys working with clients who are experiencing self-identity, interpersonal relational issues that affect their job and family dynamics. This is her ideal type of client to work with because there is a lot of self-exploration the client will need to work on first. Some of the issues that will come up are self-loathing, lack of esteem, shame, and poor self-image. As a clinician, Catherine provides them support and total acceptance. When the client can begin to embrace and accept who they are without judgment, they can begin to work on how they relate to other people in all areas of their life. This can be done slowly and one step at a time. The pace is usually set by the client and how they progress along in treatment as they embrace each stage of their new self.
Catherine began her career in the mental health field as a therapist in an inpatient facility, responsible for the patient's ongoing clinical progress while at the hospital. Her patients varied in ages from 10 to 12-year-old children, to 13 to 17-year-old adolescents, to 18 to 55-year-old adults, and seniors who were in crisis. She worked with patients who were diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Anxiety, Major Depression, Obsessive Impulsive Disorder, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Mood Disorder, Alcohol/Drug Dependency, Conduct Disorder, and Sleep disorder, just to name a few.
Catherine really enjoys getting to know people while working with them on their unique concerns. She offers a very supportive and client-centered environment to therapy, and she loves helping clients move toward their goals by being a partner in their journey towards a renewed self and clinically appropriate treatment. She enjoys working with clients and assigning them research-based homework activities to help them work independently on areas of concerns outside of the sessions. Her areas of specialty include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, motivational interviewing, interpersonal therapy, and other researched based therapeutic approaches that are appropriate to treatment.

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT)
Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW)
Elizabeth: My go-to approach is a systemic one, where I consider all factors that can affect a family, such as work, school, community, and friends.
Anthony: My go-to approach for helping people in family therapy is systemic family therapy. I find the best benefit in this approach because it views the family as an interconnected system, where everyone influences and is influenced by each other—not just focusing on one or two members as the “problem.” This helps shift the perspective from blaming individuals to understanding patterns and dynamics that maintain difficulties within the family. By exploring how family roles, communication styles, and relationships affect everyone, we can work together to create healthier interactions and support positive change for the whole family. I enjoy this approach because it encourages collaboration, respect, and shared responsibility, helping families move from frustration and blame toward connection and growth.
Elizabeth: I teach communication skills, active listening skills, validation, and examining and challenging family rules in family therapy.
Anthony: "I teach the following tools in family therapy:
Elizabeth: I know meaningful progress is being made in family therapy when generational cycles are being broken and family members are responding to each other in healthier ways.
Anthony: I know a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when family members begin to communicate more openly and listen to each other without judgment. They start recognizing their own roles in the family dynamic and take responsibility for their part. Progress is clear when conflicts are handled with more respect and empathy, and when the family creates new patterns that promote connection and support. Over time, there’s a noticeable shift toward cooperation, understanding, and stronger relationships.
Elizabeth: Clients can supplement their time in therapy with scheduled check-ins with one another about feelings and important upcoming events.
Anthony: Clients can supplement their time in family therapy by practicing the communication and listening skills learned during sessions. Spending intentional time together, even in small ways, helps reinforce new patterns and build stronger connections. It also helps to reflect individually on personal feelings and behaviors, so each family member can bring greater self-awareness to the process. These efforts between sessions make therapy more effective and meaningful.
Elizabeth: To prepare for family therapy, an individual can make sure all family members are willing to participate.
Anthony: To prepare for their first family therapy session, an individual can take some time to think about what they hope to improve in their family relationships. It’s helpful to come with an open mind and a willingness to listen and share honestly. Being ready to see the family as a whole system, rather than focusing on one “problem,” can make the experience more productive. Remember, therapy is a safe space where everyone’s voice matters.
Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.
Thriveworks family therapists in Marietta, GA usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.
The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.
This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.
In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.
Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.
Thriveworks therapists in Marietta, GA offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.
