My go-to approach for treating depression is a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), components of dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), and behavioral activation. I find optimal benefit by helping clients identify and utilize skills that help them practice non-judgment of their feelings, providing psychoeducation to help them gain insight into their depression: the type, what lifestyle modifications might be necessary, and how their early life experiences impact their current experience of depression.
Some examples of the skills I teach when providing depression counseling are as follows:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when their depression assessment scores indicate a statistical decline of symptoms over time, when the client verbalizes a decrease in symptoms, and when the client and I are able to identify specific examples of improvement compared to their initial symptomology.
In their personal time, clients can supplement counseling by practicing skills learned in therapy, engaging in agreed-upon activities, reviewing their therapy notes (if any), completing any homework or reading resources shared by the counselor, or keeping track of concerns that arise in between sessions so they remember them for the next session.
To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you should complete any paperwork sent to you ahead of time and come to the session prepared to talk about your symptoms and what you hope to gain overall from counseling.
Depression counseling can help those with major depression, minor depression, postpartum depression, persistent depressive disorder, and more. The providers at Thriveworks in Marietta, GA will develop a unique treatment plan based on your specific experience, needs, and goals.
