I start treatment with most clients using cognitive behavioral therapy. CBT teaches people how to notice their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, which gives them the opportunity to take more control in those areas.
I teach the following tools in CBT: learning and noticing the cycle of thoughts influencing feelings and feelings influencing behaviors, developing an emotional vocabulary, and learning and practicing mindfulness techniques.
A client is making meaningful progress with CBT when they can consistently notice and document their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors and intervene with tools as needed to manage them.
Clients can supplement their time in CBT by journaling, meditating/praying, and practicing self-care habits.
