Correctly diagnosing depression and anxiety can often prove to be a challenge. The main symptoms of these disorders are related to emotions that every human experiences to varying degrees throughout his or her life. The main difference in people suffering from depression and anxiety disorders is the intensity and the extended period of time in which the emotions are being felt. Some of the physical symptoms one might be subjected to are – amongst others – heart palpitations, lack of sleep, restlessness and lethargy.
The primary causes of these two mental health conditions are often traumatic events that have occurred in one’s past. Death of a loved one, losing a job and abuse in childhood, for example, are among the factors known to lead to depression. These events may cause a disruption to the balance of chemicals in the brain – it is this imbalance that can result in sustained and more intense feelings such as sadness in the case of depression and worry in the case of anxiety.
There are many different treatment options available to patients suffering from depression and anxiety. Traditionally the initial recommendations are lifestyle related – nutrition and exercise interventions that work well to reduce the symptoms in many people. Medications such as anti-depressants are also commonly used to treat conditions such as anxiety and depression – for some people medicines are very effective at reducing the symptoms to manageable levels.
The problem with these treatment methods is that they do not address the root cause, whilst only managing the symptoms. Counseling methods such as those provided by Thriveworks Fredericksburg, VA are, by contrast, effective at identifying and subsequently treating the root cause of the disorder. When combined with other interventions in a holistic manner, counseling services can be a very powerful treatment option. So why not reach out to us today and arrange your first consultation with one of our expert counselors by scheduling online or give us a call at 540-322-5424
