Starting Parenting counseling

What is parenting counseling?

Parenting counseling is a form of psychotherapy that specifically targets parenting styles and attachments in order to improve family dynamics. Parenting therapists at Thriveworks in Colorado Springs, CO work to help parents understand their parenting approach, gain insight into what personal feelings and issues might be driving it, and learn to adjust their approach in order to heal family relationships.

How does parenting counseling work?

Parenting counseling takes a look at parents as individuals, working to make connections between certain aspects of their parent styles and past events or influences. By gaining this knowledge about themselves, parents can learn to shift their perspectives and adjust their parenting to better suit their children, spouse, or situation.

Is parenting counseling conducted in person or online?

Parenting counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and through Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does parenting counseling last?

Thriveworks parenting counseling in Colorado Springs, CO can take anywhere from a few months to many years depending on the client and situations needing to be addressed. Simpler goals like how to effectively deal with a teenage child can commonly take under six sessions, but guiding parents through more complex concerns like abuse or trauma can be a much longer process.

Counseling and Therapy for Parents in Colorado Springs, CO

Moms, Dads, Caregivers: The truth is that many of us are constantly looking around for evidence that we are doing the right things as parents. Quizzes, comparisons and doubt may fill our small amount of free time. Many of us are searching and wondering, “Am I doing enough?” “Am I doing too much?” or possibly, we are so exhausted, we’ve given up and are hoping for the best.

Parenting is one of the most challenging endeavors that we will ever be on. If you think you could benefit from parenting therapy, reach out to Thriveworks Colorado Springs for help. You can schedule your first appointment right away.

What iIs Parenting Therapy?

In parenting, there is no such thing as perfection. Each family is unique with strengths and challenges. In parenting therapy, a therapist will work with the parent/guardian to work out conflicts and struggles with their child. These could be daily struggles or possibly developmental, physical or emotional struggles.

By working together, collaboration typically results in the parent feeling supported; having tools and resources to parent confidently and effectively. In parenting therapy, the goal is for you to feel comfortable within your family, and able to provide the love and support to help your child grow and develop.

What Makes a Good Parent?

Parenting is incredibly individualized, making this a difficult question. Cultural differences, values and morals are major factors that affect each family’s parenting choices. Even though there are many differences in parenting styles, many parents have similar end goals in parenting. For example, we all want our children to feel safe, feel joy and to find success and achievement in some area of their life.

In general, a “good” parent will love their children and carry out these responsibilities:

  • Seek help for children’s medical, educational and/or development needs
  • Spend quality time with their children
  • Build structure and set limits with consistency
  • Keep children safe from harm
  • Supervise children’s friendships and relationships

Could I Benefit from Parenting Therapy?

Parenting is tough, it can bring about strong emotions, challenge our patience and trigger major stress responses. Sometimes exhaustion and lack of sleep compound issues, creating a devastating combination. Other times there will come a situation where a parent hasn’t encountered yet and is looking for ideas and strategies. Some parents will come to therapy when they’ve tried several techniques without results and seek additional support.

Regardless of the reason a person attends parenting therapy, relief and support is available. The counselors at Thriveworks Counseling and Coaching will listen to you, your concerns, and your goals. Because you are the expert on your child, the counselor will work with you in a collaborative relationship. With the training and expertise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Family Systems Therapy and Person-Centered Therapy, the counselors will work with you to achieve your desired outcomes.

Parenting takes much patience. We will make mistakes, we will have regrets. This quote is important as we work to become the best parents we can be.

Since day one Marie has been so nice and understanding of all my issues with anger. She has helped me so much to take a step back and analyze issues and approach them in a very calm manner and retrain my brain to deal with anxiety issues that lead to anger. She has helped a ton in putting forth effort to better my marriage and other relationships with family. I couldn’t thank her enough for all her help in the last couple of months and in the future! Love her!! Definitely recommend her!
