What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is to assist the client in identifying negative or irrational thoughts and the associated coping mechanism. I feel that it is beneficial to reframe the cognition to assist with the alleviation of distressful thoughts/emotions and a dialectical shift in the coping mechanism.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I assist individuals in the identification of coping mechanisms, the following are a few examples:

  • Personalization: The ability to identify how others behaviors directly or indirectly affect our behavior.
  • Regret: The ability to identify and accept a situation that one regrets and the need to develop a plan to ensure future success coupled with everyday acceptance to assist with letting go.
  • Emotional reasoning: The ability to understand how one's undesired emotions often trigger negative or irrational thoughts.
Additionally, I assist with the following:
  • Behavioral activation: The need to participate in behaviors to encourage mood stability.
  • Cycle of emotions: Identification of vulnerabilities and the triggers of negative emotions and thoughts.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when he/she is able to discuss a situation that may have caused distress and has demonstrated the ability to identify the corresponding coping mechanism.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in CBT with the utilization of journaling, i.e. the communication of thoughts and feelings coupled with one's ability to reflect and seek behavioral change.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for their first CBT session, an individual should be able to identify their primary emotion and a minimum of one (1) trigger or activating event for which they seek treatment.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: What Is It?

CBT is a proactive and practical method of psychotherapy that seeks to address a specific emotional, social, or relational problem. Together with a therapist’s guidance, individuals seek to change their own negative thought and behavior patterns that may be fueling the difficulty.

While difficult circumstances certainly occur in people’s lives, there are also times when the difficulty arises because of the meaning an individual gives a particular event. First, these negative patterns must be identified, and then they can be adapted to find more positive ways of handling the issue. For example, people who struggle with insomnia may be telling themselves, “Well, I’m just a terrible sleeper.” This thought pattern can be making the sleeping difficulty worse. CBT seeks to replace this negative thought with a more positive outlook.

Because CBT addresses a particular problem, it is a short-term therapeutic model. Generally, counselors work with a client for approximately six months to a year. Within that timeframe, many emotional problems can substantially improve with a once-a-week, hour session of CBT.

Identifying the Problem’s Root: Cognitive Distortions

There are a number of negative thought patterns that people can embrace, and these often create or exacerbate challenges in their lives. Thus, CBT does not address issues directly, but it considers how individuals interpret these issues and if they are interpreting them well. All too often people embrace cognitive distortions as they interpret a situation. Cognitive distortions are simply interpreting a situation inaccurately and negatively.

A few examples of cognitive distortions include:

  • Polarized thinking
  • Blaming
  • Catastrophizing
  • Control fallacies
  • Filtering
  • Overgeneralization
  • Emotional reasoning
  • Personalization
  • Fairness fallacy

I have been seeing Terryn Maher for a couple of months now and she is awesome!! Very knowledgeable, attentive, thorough, thoughtful, caring, etc. I could go on for awhile. I’ve been in counseling with another therapist for about 14 years but I already feel like I’m getting so much more from working with Terryn. Thriveworks on a whole has been great to work with as well. They are easy to work with and schedule appointments with. I was nervous about working with a company over directly with just the therapist but it has actually worked out well. I highly recommend them!

I've worked with Mrs. Matson for close to a year now and I can say with certainty that she's a great counselor to go to for help with emotional regulation and understanding, grief management, and processing trauma in healthy and beneficial ways. Her use of meditation techniques to get to the root of my emotions and habits have helped me understand so much about myself and why I operate the way I do. I'd definitely recommend her to anyone just starting out looking for a good counselor, or anyone looking for a friendly empathetic professional who listens well and draws from a wealth of information to provide really quality services.

Adriana Blanco is wonderful. I never felt any judgement from her during our sessions. She is compassionate, firm and extremely knowledgeable. I could not see myself opening up as much with another counselor, thank you for putting her in my path.
