Tori Sweeting is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with nineteen (19) years of experience in the field of mental health to include ten (10) years working with Veterans. She has the knowledge and skills to successfully assist individuals with a variety of diagnoses—PTSD; anxiety & mood disorders; and psychosis—placing emphasis on the development of interpersonal and distress tolerance skills to effectively manage one's emotions. She assists individuals in identifying their vulnerabilities that often trigger negative cognitions or thought patterns with subsequent anxiety or depressive symptoms, i.e., the need to develop an understanding that our cognitions usually exist in categories; thus, indicating the need to successfully un-blend these thoughts to manage our maladaptive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Tori obtained her Master of Social Work (MSW) with honors from UNC-Charlotte. She has experience working with a diverse population of individuals including those having difficulty coping with the rigors of parenting and addressing the importance of creating a sense of self-worth in one’s ability to balance work, family, and individual time. She holds two (2) certifications, one (1) as a trauma professional and one (1) in dialectical behavior therapy.
One of the most difficult challenges is to accept the need to change our life’s story or narrative, the "Who I Am," as we transition from adolescence to adulthood to old age. As our awareness of self increases, our view of the world and the people around us change. With change comes motivation, and with motivation comes the perseverance and energy to become the person whom we desire to be. In my work with you, we will develop an individualized goal and treatment plan to ensure the achievement and accomplishment of your goals; thus, encouraging the narrative that you desire.

I'm excited to get the opportunity to work with you! Here are a few things you may need to know before your first appointment. If you choose to do a virtual appointment, you must be residing in North Carolina, which is the state in which I am licensed to provide services. This is not a concern if you are choosing to come in person for appointments. If you are seeking play therapy for a child, this is provided in person only due to the nature of the way service is provided, making it a service that does not lend itself to virtual appointments. This is not a concern for traditional talk therapy with adults, which can be provided virtually.
Terryn Maher is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor with over 10 years of experience working in enhanced levels of mental health care. She is passionate about helping young children who have been through trauma or major life changes utilizing play therapy, as well as adults who have identified issues that they find impact their everyday lives, relationships, and ability to parent in a healthy way. Terryn specializes in trauma-related issues, mood disorders, adjustment disorders, and anxiety disorders.
Terryn completed her Master of Arts in Community Counseling at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte. In addition to her MA, she also completed a graduate certificate in play therapy, a specialized therapeutic approach often utilized for children in the 2.5 to 10-year-old range who may not be able to verbalize and process their issues utilizing traditional talk therapy, due to developmental understanding. Terryn has also completed multiple trauma-related trainings to become a certified clinical trauma professional (CCTP), allowing her to provide trauma-informed care to all of her clients. Terryn utilizes multiple treatment approaches with adults to fit their needs including mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviewing, and client/person-centered therapy.
While our society has come a long way in destigmatizing mental health needs, Terryn understands it can still be difficult to make that first step and reach out for assistance and strives to make her clients feel as comfortable as they can with the therapeutic process. Terryn also understands how difficult it can be to find the right clinician to help guide you through the therapeutic process. Terryn is willing to work alongside you in your therapeutic journey and meet you where you are at, while also providing the insight and coping strategies you need to grow and heal. If you are ready to start, or even continue, your therapeutic journey, schedule an appointment with Terryn.
You deserve dedicated time with a mental health professional — it can be life-changing.

Eating disorder therapy is a specialized approach aimed at assisting those who are grappling with a range of eating disorders. These disorders are significant mental health conditions characterized by irregular or unhealthy eating patterns and an intense focus on body weight and shape. Common conditions addressed in Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).
At Thriveworks, Eating disorders begins with a thorough assessment and personalized treatment plan. Central to eating disorder therapy is psychotherapy, often employing cognitive behavioral therapy and other specialized techniques to target negative thought patterns.
The signs of an eating disorder can include:
CBT’s remission rate, according to some research, is generally between 50-30% for those seeking assistance for eating disorder symptoms.
The recovery rate for those seeking assistance with eating disorders depends entirely on the individual’s involvement in sessions, the severity of their symptoms, and their willingness to change their eating habits and relationship with food.
Eating disorder therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of Eating disorders will vary from one person to the next, dependent on their specific needs. Your therapist can help to determine what might be most beneficial for you.
Binge Eating Disorder is one of the most prevalent eating disorders that adults can suffer from. Despite this fact there is far less media coverage and understanding of B.E.D. when compared to conditions like Bulimia and Anorexia. The main symptoms of B.E.D are the urge to continue eating food even after you are entirely full and the often complete inability to control your food intake around meal times. Food binges are usually followed by intense emotions such as shame and guilt.
If this sounds familiar and you think you could benefit from talking to a professional, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Charlotte. We can get you scheduled with binge eating disorder counseling right away.
For many, these issues result in weight gain and obesity. These are directly linked to a drastic increase in the likelihood of developing conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease and even stroke. But the physical issues aren’t isolated; if left untreated many B.E.D. suffers become clinically depressed and experience anxiety disorders.
Thankfully for those suffering from B.E.D. the condition can be treated. Some of the most effective ways of treating the disorder are the counseling based methods. These are the methods that Thriveworks Charlotte Counseling specializes in.
The Thriveworks Charlotte counselors are specifically trained to help people who suffer from disorders like B.E.D. The counseling process is designed to cater towards your specific needs. To get started today, reach out to us. We offer evening and weekend sessions, and we accept most major insurances.
