Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Boise, ID usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Boise, ID offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

To the outside world, the Mahon family is picture-perfect. Mom and Dad are excelling in their careers, all of their children play competitive sports and get great grades in school, they have a family dog who is also well behaved, and they live in a beautiful home. There couldn’t be anything wrong with them, right?

Actually, behind closed doors, they struggle just like any other family. The children are constantly bickering, Mom and Dad sometimes fail to get along, and they’re struggling to keep up with the household chores because of their lack of time. Just because someone’s family looks perfect from the outside doesn’t mean they are.

Every family is subject to the turmoil that causes rifts in their relationships. If you and your loved ones are going through a tough spot, you’re not alone and help is available. Whether your children are having behavioral problems, your communication skills are off, or if a loved one is struggling with a mental illness, your family system can improve through the help of family counseling.

At Thriveworks Counseling in Boise, ID, our licensed marriage and family therapists have training in family therapy and can offer you and your loved ones an individualized treatment plan. They’ll help you build positive relationships and improve many aspects of your life.

If you think you and your loved ones would be a good fit for family therapy, consider reaching out to our office today.

What Is Family Therapy?

Whether you have gone to therapy before or not, family therapy may seem daunting. Sitting in a room with those closest to you, or who should be closest to you, and talking about your emotions isn’t always a walk in the park. However, family therapy is designed to treat each family member’s needs and goals in order to make the whole family unit stronger.

When you decide to pursue family therapy, your therapist will identify where the cracks are in your relationships. Maybe the issue stems from an individual member. Or maybe it’s been years of poor communication that has led up to this point.

Whatever the reason, your family therapist will find those root issues and develop a custom treatment plan based on your specific needs. In doing so, they will also utilize a variety of different therapeutic methods and techniques such as traditional talk therapy, art therapy, child therapy, and more.

Family therapy is often short-term meaning you could be finished in as little as nine sessions. Although, every family and their needs are different so don’t be discouraged if you need more time. We encourage you to not put pressure on these sessions and go into them with an open mind, ready to make meaningful changes.

Can Therapy Help My Family? Where Do We Get Started?

Deciding to pursue therapy is often a difficult decision for family members. If you want to start therapy and are having a hard time convincing members of the family that this is a good idea, try explaining to them what it means to you to try. Also, explain to them the many different ways that therapy can help.

I have been working with Jared for over a year now. When I first started with him, I was apprehensive about going to a new therapist. I was with one before and did not have much success. After my first session, I knew he was the right fit for me. My spouse had already been going for a while, so we were able to compare experiences. One thing we noticed was how Jared adapted his therapy style to each of us. We then started couples therapy with him. He has been a God-send for us in helping us work through our issues. We were able to uncover things about us that made us stronger as a team. I cannot recommend Jared enough. He is truly amazing and a master of his craft.

I met Jared @ an Out-Patient program back in 2012. I was going going threw so much at work & home and was in much need of guidance! While I HATED being there, I knew something needed to change. Somehow through out the years, I had lost my Voice. I no longer could balance what we call LIFE. Being a Wife, Step-mom, Business Woman, the Pilar to my immediate family & finally having my own child, took a toll on me...I could no longer function! While in this program, Jared asked my permission if he could be my Voice. Confused, I said yes. Then he said I could take it back when I was ready. Again confused, I replied...Okay. Each day with him, I grew stronger & stronger. I looked forward to being in the Program. By the end,I knew what he meant, I had my VOICE back! Jared helped me find myself again! Jared is NOT your typical therapist. He does not sit there with a pen + paper asking the obvious questions! He is a real down to earth person who genuinely cares about you & wants you to succeed. I was so HAPPY to find out he ventured out on his own. He has been my LIFE COACH since leaving the program & now my 13 yr old gets the PRIVILEGE to benefit from his wisdom as well! I will follow him (Virtually) where ever he goes!
