Starting LGBTQ+ counseling

What is LGBTQ+ counseling?

LGBTQ+ counseling is a type of queer affirmative counseling dedicated to assisting individuals and couples in navigating the intricate intersections of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and mental health, with a primary goal of fostering well-being, self-acceptance, and affirming a client's life experiences as a queer individual. Although not all LGBTQ+ individuals seek specialized counseling, a substantial number discover vital support and empathy within these inclusive and affirming therapeutic settings.

How does LGBTQ+ counseling work?

Thriveworks LGBTQ+ counseling in Boise, ID typically begins with an initial assessment to understand your specific needs. LGBTQ+ counselors aim to create a safe, inclusive, and affirming environment for anyone within the LGBTQ+ community by encouraging self-acceptance and offering an understanding of your identity and experiences. The therapy addresses issues like coming out, discrimination, mental health challenges, and gender transition, and provides support for LGBTQ+ relationships.

Why is LGBTQ+ counseling important?

LGBTQ+ counseling is incredibly important because it can help queer individuals accept their identity, learn self-love, and give them important tools for facing the challenges of being a queer person in today's society, among many other benefits. LGBTQ+-affirming therapists can understand the unique perspective and experiences of queer individuals as they help them process past trauma, address family conflicts, treat issues with anxiety, and more.

Is LGBTQ+ counseling conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks LGBTQ+ counseling in Boise, ID is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does LGBTQ+ counseling last?

The number of sessions for LGBTQ+ counseling depends on the specific needs and goals of the individual. It could encompass a relatively limited series of sessions or extend into a longer counseling plan. The precise quantity and duration of sessions typically emerge through collaborative discussion with the counselor, taking into account the client's progress and their therapeutic objectives.

Need more help deciding?

When she was a teenager, Alyssa was always surrounded by her friends. She felt comfortable in her skin and she found it easy to talk about school, her mental health, and her family.

But the one topic that never made sense to her was relationships. While her friends dated people all across the gender spectrum, Alyssa never felt drawn to anyone. When her friends would bring up romantic or sexual attraction, she couldn’t understand what they meant. She had never been attracted to anyone, so she always felt left out of these conversations.

This went on well into her college years. Alyssa assumed that she’d eventually become attracted to someone and decided not to worry about it. But now in her late twenties, Alyssa has still not felt physical or romantic attraction. Confused and anxious that she won’t fit in with her friends who have all married or coupled, she sets up an appointment at her local counseling office.

Alyssa speaks to a counselor who listens intently to her feelings of relationship apathy and her anxiety about being shut out of her friend group. After learning more about Alyssa, her counselor talks to her about asexual identity and aromanticism. Alyssa is stumped because she’s never considered either of these terms before even though they seem to describe her feelings perfectly. Her counselor helps her address her anxiety about being left out while providing her with more information about asexuality and aromanticism.

The rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning individuals are often glossed over in popular media. And while the internet can provide some information about what it means to be part of the LGBTQ+ community, you may still have questions that are specific to your lived experience. Our counselors, therapists, and other mental health professionals at Thriveworks in Boise, ID can help fill in those gaps by getting to know you and your personal concerns. We would love the chance to set up a session with you.

When Is the Right Time To Seek Help?

Think of the people you might see at a park. Some are there to picnic and enjoy the sun while others are there to run or bike for exercise. There are even people there to meditate and relieve stress.

When people visit a counselor or therapist’s office, they do so for different reasons, too. Some of the reasons our LGBTQ+ clients have sought our services are to address:

  • Physical, mental, and emotional abuse
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Substance abuse
  • Eating disorders
  • Confidence issues
  • Problems with family and friends
  • Issues with self-acceptance
  • Gender identity issues
  • Sexual orientation confusion or concerns
  • Challenging stereotypes
  • Transphobia against transgender individuals

These and other LGBTQ+ issues can be addressed during counseling, and no single reason for visiting a counseling center is less valid than any other reason. When your mental and emotional health feels imbalanced, please reach out to the professionals at Thriveworks in Boise, ID.

How LGBTQ+ Counseling Can Help Me

Everyone can benefit from the restorative powers of counseling. But members of the LGBTQ+ community often have unique needs that deserve to be addressed with thoughtfulness and care.

Our counselors, psychiatrists, and other providers will begin by getting to know you, your environment, your past experiences, and your concerns. They specialize in addressing many different issues, including topics such as:

  • Family conflicts: They can equip you with the tools to combat misgendering, homophobia, and communication problems within your family.
  • Self-identity: Being the truest version of yourself means accepting all the different parts of yourself. Your provider can use therapy and other techniques to help you feel comfortable in your own skin.
  • Sexual identity: Heteronormative ideas of relationships abound in media, but counselors and other providers can discuss the wide range of sexual identities and see which you may connect with best.

Working with a counselor or therapist can help you parse through these and other issues. We’re ready to lend an ear whenever you’re ready to get started. Consider giving us a call at Thriveworks in Boise, ID to schedule an appointment.

I have been working with Jared for over a year now. When I first started with him, I was apprehensive about going to a new therapist. I was with one before and did not have much success. After my first session, I knew he was the right fit for me. My spouse had already been going for a while, so we were able to compare experiences. One thing we noticed was how Jared adapted his therapy style to each of us. We then started couples therapy with him. He has been a God-send for us in helping us work through our issues. We were able to uncover things about us that made us stronger as a team. I cannot recommend Jared enough. He is truly amazing and a master of his craft.

I met Jared @ an Out-Patient program back in 2012. I was going going threw so much at work & home and was in much need of guidance! While I HATED being there, I knew something needed to change. Somehow through out the years, I had lost my Voice. I no longer could balance what we call LIFE. Being a Wife, Step-mom, Business Woman, the Pilar to my immediate family & finally having my own child, took a toll on me...I could no longer function! While in this program, Jared asked my permission if he could be my Voice. Confused, I said yes. Then he said I could take it back when I was ready. Again confused, I replied...Okay. Each day with him, I grew stronger & stronger. I looked forward to being in the Program. By the end,I knew what he meant, I had my VOICE back! Jared helped me find myself again! Jared is NOT your typical therapist. He does not sit there with a pen + paper asking the obvious questions! He is a real down to earth person who genuinely cares about you & wants you to succeed. I was so HAPPY to find out he ventured out on his own. He has been my LIFE COACH since leaving the program & now my 13 yr old gets the PRIVILEGE to benefit from his wisdom as well! I will follow him (Virtually) where ever he goes!
