I would say that my go to approach for addiction counseling is a combination of person centered, motivational interviewing, and CBT. I find that clients are able to benefit from this approach as it is self-guided and it allows for someone to look at what may have caused the concerns and what they can do to address them.
The skills that I teach in addiction counseling are look at pros and cons list, cost benefit analyst, the importance of sober supports, and the different types of groups that are available to them. I feel that a lot of stress is placed on those who struggle with addictions and that they have been told that there is only one way to solve the problem. I feel this creates feelings of hopelessness and I find that by offering other solutions, it can help create a sense of hope.
One of the things that I find that a client can get out of addiction therapy is that they start to live a life of recovery, rather than just being sober. This looks at being able to enjoy life, being able to handle stressors with out resorting to substances, and also being able to be grateful for what they have and establish a sense of peace within themselves.
I find that in reading books such as The Realm of Hungry Ghosts by Gabor Mate or other books along those lines can help clients be able to be able to understand addiction and see how they are not alone. If I can I will also look up stories of other authors who have struggled with addiction and how they are able to get out of it. I find that hearing another's story about being able to get out of the addiction cycle can be very helpful.
I would say that to prepare for this type of counseling to come in with questions, come ready to learn about the way addiction plays a part in our brain chemistry, and if they attended meetings such as (NA, AA, Dharma Recovery, etc). I ask for this because I want to be able to help the client be able to know what has worked, if they are ready for that next step, and also what they are hoping to accomplish from treatment as well.
