Have life events or stress become overwhelming or seem unmanageable? Maybe you just need a supportive space to talk about what you’re going through and how you are feeling.

Abel Juarez is a Resident in Counseling who specializes in depression, anger, anxiety, relationships, and addiction. In life, there will be obstacles and complications that can interrupt and affect how individuals cope with negative as well as positive outcomes. These outcomes can influence a person's thought process and have the ability to make them feel overwhelmed, powerless, and anxious. In counseling, these challenges can be handled in a manner in which individuals, couples, and families can address and begin to understand how such difficulties can result in the present situations.
"I am passionate about aiding those in difficult situations to focus on their strengths and build on them," says Abel. "In this, the counseling process becomes an understanding of several issues instead of focusing on the negative aspects that people find themselves in. Therefore, progress can move forward and the client and I can begin to address the issues at heart.
Furthermore, counseling sessions are a nonjudgmental arena in which the client is not thought of in a negative light. Being that, everyone experiences life and reacts to circumstances both negatively and positively. The extent of this reaction is where counseling starts to help those in need of a better understanding of how they conduct themselves."

Marriage counseling, also known as couples therapy and relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Thriveworks marriage counseling in Abingdon, VA is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within Marriage counseling include:
Marriage counseling works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular marriage counseling sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.
Marriage counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage counseling for 12 weeks. However, marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress. Marriage counselors and therapists at Thriveworks in Abingdon, VA work with their clients to create goals, decide on ideal timelines, and establish treatment plans.
For many years the divorce rate in the US has remained very high – according to recent estimates as many as 40%-50% of all marriages fall apart. Many couples experience problems such as betrayal, incompatible sexual expectations, faltering communication or development of gradual indifference and disinterest towards one another. Often couples find themselves incapable of addressing and solving these serious problems alone. In such cases counseling for couples is often the best course of action, allowing spouses to avoid divorce or separation, or helping them end their relationship on good terms.
It is true that many people might initially feel apprehensive about the idea of marriage or couples counseling, hoping to deal with their relationship problems privately. The benefits of such therapy are nonetheless indisputable in many cases. Many couples find that conflict resolution is easier to achieve under the guidance of a counselor who has no connection and no preconceived ideas about their relationship. Couples and marriage counseling therefore allows them to gain some perspective and become better communicators.
The first thing anyone considering starting couples or marriage therapy has to recognize is that no simple answers will be given. A counselor is to act as an objective observer and is not to dictate what should or should not be done. He or she is there to help partners decide on their own what is the best course of action for themselves and for their relationship.
Couples and marriage counseling focuses on helping couples improve their communication skills and address their conflicts in a constructive manner. Participants will usually learn how to control their emotions, listen to one another, negotiate and avoid conflict escalation. It is generally accepted that for this type of therapy to be most effective both spouses or partners have to attend; in some cases, however, it might be that one party refuses to participate or decides to join the therapy at a later stage.
Couples and marriage therapy are often regarded as a last resort, reserved only for those who are facing an imminent risk of divorce or separation. It is true, however, that many couples decide to attend counseling for very different reasons: for example, to prepare together for life as a married couple (premarital counseling), to build a stronger bond with each other or to address issues that could potentially lead to conflicts in the future. Whether a couple is facing some very difficult challenges, or has to confront some minor problems, professional counseling is often the way to go forward.
At Thriveworks Bristol our professional couples and marriage counselors offer support to people at various stages of their relationships, often having to deal with very particular problems. Thanks to our extensive experience we understand how to look after our clients – we tailor our counseling sessions to the individual needs of every couple. We encourage you to reach out to us now to arrange your first couples or marriage counseling session.
