What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

My go-to approach for family therapy is structural family therapy. I find the best benefit in structural family therapy because it works on the family as an entire system and studies how each individual may impact the family as a whole.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

I teach the following tools in family therapy

  • Role-playing, which can allow the family to see their actions from another lens
  • Reframing to help client view their problems from a different perspective
  • Boundary-making to establish healthier boundaries within the family system

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when they report less conflict within their family structure.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Clients can supplement their time on family therapy by practicing techniques learned in sessions and completing homework assigned during sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

To prepare for their first family therapy session, I would encourage the family to be open-minded, be willing to hear each member of the family out, and encourage each member to be open during sessions for best results.

Starting Family therapy in Pflugerville

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Pflugerville, TX usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Pflugerville, TX offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

When one person struggles, often, the whole family struggles. Has your family faced any of these challenges?

  • Is being a parent far harder than you anticipated?

  • Is your family growing apart, and you are not sure how to work together again?
  • Is your family repeating hurtful patterns of behavior, over, and over again?

The counselors at Thriveworks Pflugerville have the tools that your family needs to come together again. Reach out today to schedule your first family therapy session.

What Is Family Therapy? How Does It Work?

Family therapy considers each individual as they are placed within the family unit. This may include look at the family’s role, coping mechanisms, expectations, and more. The most common approaches to counseling families are family systems therapy and family structural therapy. These are based upon the idea that families, for good or bad, shape people’s identities and behaviors. Thus, helping the family as a whole function well means each individual member benefits.

Building a strong family unit has many potential rewards, including …

  1. Reduced risk of poverty with shared expenses and greater income potential
  2. Fewer instances of neglect, abuse, or problems with the law
  3. Increased capacity for handling stress and hardship
  4. Less anxiety and depression-related conditions
  5. Better attachment and greater possibility of children learning healthy relational skills

When Is the Time for Family Therapy?

Think about some of the challenges your family faces. Is more than one person contributing to the problem? Could more than one person contribute to the solution? If so, family therapy may be a good option. Specifically, consider family therapy if your family is struggling with the following challenges:

  1. Authoritarian/overbearing parenting and rebellious children
  2. Permissive parenting and out-of-control children
  3. Hormonal changes with teens or parents that are contributing to conflict
  4. Special-needs family members and equally distributing care/interaction
  5. Intimacy/love problems in the marriage relationship
  6. Addiction, abuse, and/or neglect in the family
  7. Failure to meet the needs of each family member
  8. Insufficient premarital counseling and/or marriage maintenance
  9. Struggling/hard times as a divorce/separation prevention
  10. Tension/hostility in any relationships

Family therapy is not a magic formula, but it has helped many families breakout of unhealthy patterns and work together in harmony. If the individual members are willing to do the work, a Thriveworks counselor can guide the family toward more peaceful, loving relationships.

Amanda always validates my feelings and is great at talking me through what is happening in my head. She allows me to talk and get out what I need to then helps me analyze it to move past it. I am truly grateful for her. I was very afraid of restarting therapy with a new clinician but I can't say enough how appreciative I am of her.
