My go-to approaches for helping people in couples/marriage counseling are the Gottman Method and communicating together. I use these methods because I see the benefit of couples being able to communicate in the best way for each other.
I teach the following: communication, working together, and being able to use coping skills such as deep breathing and taking breaks for conversations to reset.
I know clients are making meaningful progress in couples counseling when couples find themselves in a tough conversation with each other but are able to use coping skills such as using “I” statements and deep breathing to help them work through it and get to a solution together.
Clients can go on dates and spend time together doing things they both enjoy.
I suggest clients just come in together and be able to discuss the story of what is happening in the marriage.
Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:

At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.
The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.
If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.
While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.
Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

The author Mark Twain once stated, “To get the full value of joy, you must have someone to divide it with.” For many people, an intimate partner is the person they look to when they want to share vivid life experiences. The experiences don’t have to be joyful. Sometimes they’re agonizing, or confusing, or scary. But the presence of a spouse or loved one can ease the burden of pain, or heighten the feelings of happiness. Because love is about sharing.
But what happens when an intimate relationship starts to falter? Then your partner can become a source of pain rather than support. That’s when many couples turn to marriage counseling. Couples therapy and marriage counseling at Thriveworks in Novi, MI is a healthy way to strengthen your intimate bonds and discover more about yourself, your loved one, and how you relate to each other. The licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) at Thriveworks have the compassion and insight to facilitate meaningful discussions about tough topics. The expert counselors at Thriveworks can also help couples maintain their relationship even if they’re not actively experiencing problems. In couples counseling, a therapist hopes that each partner will learn what they set out to learn when they begin therapy. For example, a partner may start therapy with the goal of reducing arguments at home. Through relationship counseling that person might learn her partner’s triggers and be able to adapt her language to communicate more effectively. In turn, her partner might become more aware of why certain words trigger distress, and find coping strategies.
