When working with clients who are seeking treatment for trauma or PTSD, my approach is client-centered and focuses on helping the client be able to move forward from the trauma in order to have a healthy and happier life. Many clients who seek counseling for PTSD and trauma do so because the trauma has kept them stuck emotionally and they are having a difficult time moving forward in at least one aspect of their life.
When working with clients who are seeking counseling for PTSD and trauma, my approach focuses primarily on being able to process trauma as well as using CBT approaches and mindfulness strategies to help manage intense emotions, as they often present with anxiety symptoms as well.
When a client is making meaningful progress with treatment for PTSD and trauma, they can typically acknowledge feeling more in control over their intrusive thoughts, are able to ground themselves emotionally, and experience less anxiety on a regular basis. The client would also note that they are able to redirect their thoughts and are able to work on having more peace in their lives. The trauma is also no longer causing them to feel stuck.
Clients who are in counseling to address PTSD and trauma can supplement their time in therapy by engaging in activities that help them feel a sense of calm and rest as well. Being able to journal, engage in mindfulness activities, as well as seek support from their loved ones if they are experiencing emotional discomfort is also encouraged.
To prepare for their first session, someone should identify goals they would want to work on as well as recognize that working through trauma is a process and can take time. Healing is a process; however, it is worth it for anyone who is seeking counseling.
At Thriveworks, Trauma/PTSD therapy involves dedicated efforts to address and navigate through past and/or recent traumatic events. If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.
The success rate of therapy for PTSD depends entirely on the individual’s symptoms, commitment to attending sessions, and personal abilities.
