About
Whatever concerns are bringing you to therapy, my aim is to help you to know yourself better and to live a fuller life.
My name is John DeHart, and I am a licensed psychologist with 14 years of experience. I work primarily with adults, college students, millennials, individuals who identify as neurodivergent or creative, and members of the LGBTQ+ community. I often help clients navigate life transitions, attachment and relationship issues, depression, anxiety, and concerns related to sexuality. While I adapt my approach to meet each person’s needs, my training is rooted in psychodynamic theory. I believe in a holistic and depth-oriented approach to therapy, one that explores the underlying causes of symptoms to create lasting change.
I earned my doctorate from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia and have trained at several colleges and community mental health agencies. My experience spans both rural and urban settings, which has given me perspective on the unique challenges people face in different environments. As a gay man living with chronic health issues, I am particularly sensitive to matters related to sexuality, diversity, and health, and I strive to bring that awareness into my work with every client.
I understand that connecting with a new provider can feel intimidating. My goal is to create a laid-back, safe, and supportive environment where you can confront challenges openly and begin making meaningful, sustainable changes in your life. I look forward to connecting with you and invite you to reach out to schedule an appointment when you feel ready.

When helping couples in counseling, I find the best benefit in helping the couples recognize that the relationship is actually the client, and that the goal of counseling is to improve the relationship as a whole, not one particular individual.
When working with couples in counseling, I prefer to use some of Gottman's techniques as well as teaching communication strategies. When working with couples, I have often used the analogy of the “dance” of a relationship. It takes two people to learn new skills and “steps” to be able to work more effectively together. I focus on how each individual has their own separate role in helping improve the relationship and ultimately the outcome.
When working with couples, I can tell that the clients are making meaningful progress when they are both able to provide examples of the progress each one is individually making with changing behaviors. Having the couples provide examples of what had been helpful and where they need to continue to grow as a couple is another way of assessing overall progress.
It is important for couples to spend time together, intentionally connecting emotionally outside of therapy sessions. I recommend to many of the couples I have worked with that monthly dates as well as intentional time at least once a week, checking in with each other emotionally, is an important part of ongoing progress.
To prepare for the first couple's counseling session, I suggest the client prepare a few notes about what is most important to them and what they want to get out of couples counseling. It is also important to remember that the couple's session is about helping the two individuals work together more effectively and not “fix” their partner.
Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:
The types of therapy used in couples and marriage counseling include:
At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.
The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.
If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.
While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.
Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.
Our significant others are the people that we choose to experience life with. These are the people that we share in our happiness, our excitement, our accomplishments. If we’re being real, these are also the people we fight with the most and even despise sometimes, too. Because nobody’s experience in life is all good—as we well know, there are both ups and downs. The special thing is that sometimes it’s the tough stuff that ends up bringing us closer together. Now, that’s not to say that working through the tough stuff is a piece of cake. Settling arguments and resolving other challenges can be difficult. And sometimes, it takes the help of a marriage counselor or couples therapist.

Couples therapy and marriage counseling are virtually the same thing. Marriage counseling, though, can better describe this journey for married couples! That said, both of these therapies are designed to help couples work through their problems and strengthen their relationship. Now, therapy often looks different for every couple. This is because couples therapists and marriage counselors design the journey around what that couples needs or hopes to achieve:
As you can probably tell, our needs and our goals go hand in hand. They are both important, and your couples therapist or marriage counselor will be sure to treat them as such when they design a plan for treatment.
Some couples are hesitant to begin couples therapy because they doubt the process. They wonder if it truly works. We’ve seen the benefits that our clients find in couples therapy and marriage counseling, but you don’t have to take our word for it. 525+ couples were asked about their experiences in couples therapy, and here’s what they had to say:
If you feel encouraged and empowered to discover your own benefits in couples therapy, reach out to us at Thriveworks Counseling. We can set you up with one of our skilled and compassionate relationship experts right away.
Here’s the thing: Any couple can pursue couples therapy. There are no requirements that they must meet before they can schedule an appointment with a couples therapist.
