Starting Couples/marriage therapy

What is couples & marriage counseling?

Couples therapy and marriage counseling, also known as relationship counseling, helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy and marriage counseling include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

What type of therapy is used in couples therapy?

The types of therapy used in couples and marriage counseling include:

  • The Gottman Method
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Emotionally-focused therapy (EFT)
  • Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT)
  • Strength-based therapy

What kind of therapist is best for couples?

At Thriveworks, Couples/marriage therapy is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples.

What is the Gottman Method of couples therapy?

The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.

How to tell if I need couples therapy?

If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.

Should every couple go to couples therapy?

While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.

Is couples & marriage counseling conducted in person or online?

Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples & marriage counseling last?

On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

How much does couples & marriage counseling cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. More information on current self-pay costs is available on our pricing page.

Need more help deciding?

Would you call your relationship perfect? Probably not. Because no relationship is perfect. Would you call your relationship fulfilling, important, and worth all the effort that you put into it? Hopefully, the answer is yes. This is what matters. However, you must remember that you are going to run into challenges that threaten your relationship. Consider these examples:

  1. Amanda and Johnny are the “it” couple. They’re two peas in a pod and everyone yearns for the passionate, loving relationship they always put on display. But the truth is that they’ve been arguing nonstop lately. And they can’t seem to get out of this rough patch.
  2. Hanna and Andy don’t have a whole lot in common. This has never bothered them before but lately it’s driving a wedge into their relationship. They’re both always off doing their own thing and lack that quality time together.
  3. Grace and Julie have been trying to piece back their marriage. Julie’s family and friends tell her it isn’t worth it, but she insists that they’ll overcome Grace’s adulterous actions.

All of the above have the potential to wreck a relationship. Any of these couples can call it quits at any moment. Or, they can choose to work through their given challenge together. Sometimes, doing so successfully means working with a couples therapist or marriage counselor.

If you and your partner are looking to repair or improve your relationship, consider working with an online couples therapist or marriage counselor at Thriveworks New Jersey Counseling. These services are led by skilled, dedicated mental health professionals who will offer your relationship individualized care. To begin couples therapy or marriage counseling now, just contact our office.

What Are the Benefits of Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling?

Effective communication, intimacy, compassion, connection, reparations. These are just a few of the benefits that you and your partner can find in couples therapy and marriage counseling. The exact benefits that you reap will depend on what has brought you to counseling. For example, Amanda and Johnny (from the example above) can benefit from learning to communicate more effectively and really dig into what’s going on with their counselor. Grace and Julie, on the other hand, can benefit from talking about the infidelity and figuring out a way forward.

A strong relationship requires choosing to love each other

even in those moments when you struggle to like each other.”

–Dave Willis

The online couples therapists and marriage counselors at Thriveworks New Jersey Counseling can help you and your partner today. We offer two online counseling options: video counseling and phone counseling. In either medium, we can help you and your partner work through your unique challenges and find benefit in counseling. How Does Couples and Marriage Counseling Work?

The journey that you embark on with your partner and counselor will, again, depend on your specific needs. These include individual needs and relationship needs. For example, you might be missing date nights, but your partner doesn’t seem to care about them. If it’s important to you, however, it’s still important to your relationship. Your Thriveworks New Jersey couples therapist or marriage counselor will take all of these needs into consideration as they design your treatment plan.

Now, there are a few common goals that people find in couples therapy and/or marriage counseling:

  • Improved communication
  • Better understanding of one another’s needs
  • Improved conflict resolution skills
  • Greater trust

The relationship experts at Thriveworks New Jersey Counseling are excited for the chance to work with you and your partner. They will welcome you into a caring, compassionate, and supportive space for bettering your relationship.
