Starting Codependency therapy

What is codependency therapy?

Codependency therapy with our Thriveworks Houston therapists helps people reduce and overcome codependent habits, which involve sacrificing one’s own needs to meet the needs of others (usually those closest to them). It helps to improve one’s well-being as well as the health of their relationships.

How does codependency therapy work?

Codependency therapy works by helping the individual recognize, understand, and accept codependent patterns — including why and how they might’ve developed. In addition, it focuses on helping the individual to kick these tendencies and build more balanced relationships that allow them to support others without neglecting their own needs.

Is codependency therapy conducted in person or online?

Codependency therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does codependency therapy last?

Codependent counseling can last for a few weeks, months, or longer. It depends on the exact needs of the client as well as the severity of their codependent challenges and other needs or preferences.

How Can Thriveworks Houston Help Me?

The therapists at Thriveworks Houston may employ one, or a mix, of the following therapies to treat the symptoms of codependency-related issues:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): This therapy aims to identify and change maladaptive thoughts and behaviors associated with codependency, promoting healthier patterns of thinking and relating to others.
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT): DBT helps individuals learn skills for managing intense emotions, improving interpersonal relationships, and setting boundaries, which are often challenges for those struggling with codependency.
  • Schema therapy: This approach explores underlying beliefs and patterns developed in childhood that contribute to codependent behaviors, helping individuals challenge and reframe these schemas to develop healthier relationship dynamics.
  • Twelve-step programs: Participation in programs such as Codependents Anonymous (CoDA) provides support, guidance, and a sense of community for individuals seeking to recover from codependency through a structured program of self-awareness and personal growth.
  • Family therapy: Involving family members in therapy can address relational dynamics and patterns that contribute to codependency, fostering healthier communication, boundaries, and support systems within the family unit.
  • Mindfulness-based therapy: Practices such as mindfulness meditation and self-compassion exercises can help individuals develop greater self-awareness, acceptance, and emotional regulation, reducing codependent tendencies and promoting self-care.

I have been working with Dr. Covey for almost 6 months now and she has been excellent. I feel like I am heard and understood even when I have a hard time expressing things myself and putting thoughts into words. Having someone who can actually listen and provide the resources to assist myself with past trauma and current challenges has been a life changer.

This is prior to being seen so this is strictly based on first impressions upon entering the building. The waiting area is nice but undefined as to where one should go nor any indications as to what is needed to be done. No one was there to greet us nor was there any desk or window to suggest someone would. We looked for the therapist's office but no doors had any identification to point us in the right direction. At this point we're at the mercy of the clock alerting the therapist to seek us out in the waiting area in order to be seen. Not the best first impression. I will update this review if and when we are seen.
