About
I am here for you.
Beginning in 2013, Darwin Green trained as a substance abuse counselor as a civilian at a Marine Corps Base. He continued counseling studies and training since then, working with clients of diverse and varied backgrounds in a shifting and changing world.
Mr. Green started with a career diploma at Penn Foster career school as a military spouse. He interned at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton at their Consolidated Substance Abuse Counseling Center. From there, Mr. Green acquired a B.S. in Psychology from Penn State University. Afterward, he spent some time participating as a research assistant for the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he was trained in PTSD assessment tools. Mr. Green gained his provisional license in Drug and Alcohol Counseling (PLDAC) in the state of Nebraska. Mr. Green then went through the Johns Hopkins masters degree program for Clinical Mental Health Counseling, afterward acquiring his Graduate License (LGPC) in Maryland.
"Changes in life can be difficult and leave us stranded. Sometimes we need a different perspective to gain enough clarity to move past the obstacles that present themselves at difficult moments," says Mr. Green. "I am here to lend a hand, to listen to you, and to support you through your growth."

A go-to approach for teen counseling is a confidential safe space to explore oneself from a lens of validation and empathy to lead to organic problem-solving in areas that are no longer healthy for our development as whole human beings.
Self-awareness is our biggest skill and effective communication is our biggest tool. Focusing on building self-esteem and self-confidence through empowerment, boundary building, and conflict-resolution skills are great strategies when working with teens.
The way one can evaluate meaningful progress from a client is when they say this work is hard. Nothing worth doing comes easy or is changed in a few sessions. Our brains are lazy; working with a client through changing habits and thought processes takes time, exploration, and practice without judgment.
Completing the therapeutic homework, whether it's literal homework in terms of behavioral charts, for example, creative arts, or more existentially around thinking through concerts in between sessions. Therapeutic work, in my opinion, does not happen exclusively in the sessions, it happens outside of sessions. The therapeutic setting is meant to explore concepts on a deeper level to then make the next step of practicing those skills and concepts in between sessions.
Making the initial step to set up the session is the most important and most empowering/strengths-based thing someone can do, albeit scary! To prepare for that first intake, remember, you're a rock star already.
Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.
Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Glen Burnie have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.
Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.
Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Glen Burnie, MD offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.
