What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

My approach to couples/marriage counseling is to create a safe and supportive environment where both partners feel heard and understood. I use a variety of techniques to help couples identify and address underlying issues and patterns that contribute to relationship difficulties. My approach is collaborative, empathetic, and solution-focused, striving to empower couples to overcome challenges and build a fulfilling and resilient relationship.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach the following tools in couples/marriage counseling:

  • Communication skills – building an understanding of how to accurately convey a message to your partner to improve mutual understanding.
  • Conflict resolution – finding a way for two or more parties to reach a peaceful resolution.
  • Emotional and physical intimacy – improving feelings of closeness, sharing personal feelings, and personal validation.
  • Alignment – gaining clarity on mutual goals and aspirations.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know when a couple is making progress when they are able to navigate challenges more effectively, strengthen their bond, and cultivate a more fulfilling and satisfying relationship.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

To supplement their time in couples/marriage counseling, clients can create a weekly or monthly family meeting. During this meeting, they can discuss their feelings about their relationship, any patterns they've noticed in the previous weeks, upcoming events, and common goals they would like to achieve. This is a great way to keep the lines of communication open and work together towards a stronger and healthier relationship.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

To prepare for your first couples or marriage counseling session, you can take the following steps:1. Reflect on goals and concerns: Take some time to reflect individually and as a couple on what you hope to achieve through counseling. 2. Clarify expectations: Have an open and honest discussion with your partner about what you both expect from counseling. Discuss your hopes, fears, and any reservations you may have. 3. Be open-minded: Approach counseling with an open mind and a willingness to explore new perspectives and strategies. 4. Commit to the process: Recognize that couples/marriage counseling requires time, effort, and commitment from both partners. 5. Practice empathy and communication: Make an effort to practice empathy and active listening in your interactions with your partner. 6. Manage expectations: Understand that counseling is not a quick fix and that progress may take time. Be patient with yourselves and each other as you work through challenges and setbacks.7. Consider individual therapy: In some cases, individual therapy alongside couples counseling can be beneficial, especially if there are underlying personal issues or traumas that need to be addressed.8. Take care of yourselves: Prioritize self-care and maintain a healthy balance in your life outside of counseling. By taking these steps to prepare for couples/marriage counseling, you can lay a strong foundation for a successful therapeutic journey and meaningful growth in your relationship.

Couples therapy FAQs

What is couples therapy?

Thriveworks Couples therapy helps couples work through their specific relationship issues. It is led by licensed professionals — often licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFTs) — who are experts in their field and best-equipped to help couples. Some examples of common focuses within couples therapy include:

  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity
  • Opposing values
  • Different visions for the future
  • Disagreements in parenting
  • Lack of trust
  • Financial distress
  • Sex issues

How does couples therapy work?

Couples therapy works by helping couples identify and better navigate their unique challenges. Following an initial assessment of the couple in terms of strengths and needs, the therapist would then discuss their therapeutic goals and any possible approaches or ways of working together as therapist and couple.
Couples attend sessions together, whether they meet in person or by video. In addition to regular couples therapy sessions, each partner may also be asked to attend a few individual sessions to supplement their progress. This will allow their counselor to get to know each individual better, assess each of their personal needs, and develop the very best treatment plan moving forward.

Is couples therapy conducted in person or online?

Couples therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.

How long does couples therapy last?

On average, couples attend couples therapy for 12 weeks. However, couples therapy may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.

  • Disagreeing about how to raise children
