About
Nadine Kakanou is a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) who has 5 years of experience in the mental health field. Nadine completed her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at Walden University. A PMHNP is tasked with evaluating a patient’s mental health status by assessing their relevant medical background, conducting comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, and identifying potential issues that might negatively impact a patient's mental health. The primary concern of individuals suffering from mental health problems is accessing mental health care professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive care and offer preventive strategies. Although PMHNPs receive intense training to meet mental health patients' needs, their roles are poorly understood because regulatory barriers have limited the entire scope of the practice.
Due to the complexity of human beings in understanding their lives and illness experience, a PMHNP requires the ability to access situations from different perspectives, not only through a psychological lens but also from a biological and development view, while recognizing the perspective of stakeholders affected. Besides, mental health disorders affect the ability to communicate experiences, and their symptoms may not conform to conventional diagnostic criteria. PMHNPs need to have a high tolerance of uncertainties and a willingness to frequently re-evaluate assessments upon discovering new information.
In addition to diagnosing and treating disease, PMHNPs nurture resilience and growth capacity because of the impact of psychiatric disorders on patients' growth and development abilities. The existing healthcare system may fail to address the complexity of problems suffered by patients completely. Consequently, PMHNPs need to effectively advocate for patients to acquire all the services needed to meet their mental health needs. They also need to push for the development of more effective services. In conclusion, PMHNPs are well prepared and equipped to provide independent and effective psychiatric care and treatment to effectively meet the needs of mental health patients.

Most parents would agree that our teenage years looked a lot different than those of our children’s. Our kids are growing up in a time when everything is displayed on social media for their peers to see, dissect, and judge. As exciting as that immediate feedback may seem sometimes, there is also a vast amount of stress that comes along with it. The expectation that kids need to always look perfect in pictures that are posted, reply with a funny comment, or be up to date on all the current trends and gossip can set teens up for an unrealistic view of what they should be. Columbia, MD teen counselors know just how harmful that can be on a teen’s mental health.
Teens are faced with trying to look the right way and present their best selves every day. We all know that being the best version of yourself comes with work and knowing how to tackle each day. Kids and teens may need help learning how to cope with judgement, and how to overcome stress and anxiety. Our child and teen therapists want to help your child learn that social media is not reality. It is only snippets of the good things in life, and does not show off the struggles one faces daily. Social media is not the only issue kids and teens these days face. Our therapists want to give your child the skills they need to thrive in their day-to-day life. The providers at Thriveworks Columbia are especially equipped to help your child with any given challenge, as they have an impressive set of skills as well as experience in helping these young individuals.
Just as the causes of mental health issues are varied, the problems teens face are varied as well. Some common issues that teens deal with today are:
When the pressure is so high to present your best self, teens can sometimes feel like there isn’t anywhere safe to turn when dealing with a personal problem. Taking time to step away from the fast paced social media environment can give teens the chance to fully process their problems, questions and fears without judgement or pressure. Columbia, MD counselors and psychologists are fully trained and up to date on the current research that affects kids and teens in their face paced environment.
