About
I recognize the courage it takes to ask for help in order to find healing and change.
Alexis Bahnmaier is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Virginia with over 17 years of experience working with clients that struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, and trauma. She also specializes in helping individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community work through questions of gender, sexuality, identity, as well as the social prejudices and anxieties associated with family, friends, and workplaces.
Alexis earned her Master's degree in Social Work from Florida State University and implements a warm counseling style that is interactive, and heavily client-centered. Focusing on treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, without using stigmatizing labels. Her approach combines cognitive-behavioral (CBT), humanistic, and solutions-focused (SFT) methods.
Alexis will focus on tailoring sessions and treatment plans to meet your unique and specific needs. She is a firm believer that rather than pushing an individual through treatment, therapy should guide and support them at their own pace. Alexis knows that it takes courage to seek treatment for a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps toward positive change.

Marriage and couples counseling at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you and your partner.
On average, couples attend marriage and couples counseling for 12 weeks. However, couples & marriage counseling may last longer or shorter, dependent on the couples’ needs, the challenges they’d like to work through, and the pace of their progress.
