The Gottman Method of couples therapy is a research-supported approach designed to enhance relationships by bolstering the bond between partners, resolving conflicts, and fostering shared meaning in their relationship through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions that improve communication, trust, and the overall health of the partnership.

How to tell if I need couples therapy?

If you’re facing persistent relationship problems, communication breakdowns, or unresolved conflicts that are impacting your emotional well-being and happiness, Couples/marriage therapy may be beneficial for you.

Should every couple go to couples therapy?

While marriage and couple’s counseling is typically recommended for couples who are experiencing persistent or severe relationship issues, any relationship can benefit from attending these sessions.

Reasons to Seek Out Relationship Counseling

There are many reasons to talk to a therapist, and there aren’t many reasons not to. If you think your relationship could benefit from the guidance and support of a relationship professional, schedule an appointment. Some common reasons people decide to talk to a couples or marriage counselor include:

  • A dissatisfied sex life
  • Financial challenges
  • Differing styles of parenting
  • Opposing views (such as political differences)
  • Jealousy
  • Trust issues
  • Infidelity

Couples therapy can help you work through these issues properly. It’s also beneficial for those who:

  • Are going through a tough time together, such as grieving the loss of a loved one
  • Would like to proactively prepare their relationship for potential future challenges
  • Want to improve a weaker area of their relationship, such as communication

Thriveworks Counseling is happy to help any couple willing to devote their time and energy to therapy.

How Do Couples Therapy and Marriage Counseling Work?

Couples therapy and marriage counseling focus on helping couples improve their relationships. As with most forms of therapy, your therapist will want to get to know you before offering a treatment plan.

Your couples counselor might ask to have a session or two with you and your partner separately to assess your individual needs and goals. This, combined with sessions together, will help them best understand what your relationship needs.

Therapists often pull from different types of therapy and techniques, including:

  • The Gottman Method, as developed by John Gottman
  • Emotionally focused therapy
  • Solution-focused therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy

Your Thriveworks couples therapist will always have your best interest in mind. They’re there to help you through difficult conversations, improve your problem-solving skills, and maintain a happy, healthy relationship with your partner or spouse.
