My go-to approach for treating depression is to explore the client's biased depressive self-talk and shift them to reality-based cognitive messages that enhance self-confidence. I find the best benefit in engaging the client in behavioral activation to increase their activity level because it has been shown to improve their quality of life.
I teach the following tools in depression counseling: dissecting core beliefs and implementing behavioral strategies to overcome depression.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in depression counseling when they are able to verbalize a clearer understanding of the cause of depression and actively engage in activities to reach their goals and resolve their current interpersonal problems.

To prepare for your first depression counseling session, you can be ready to take active steps to make changes.
