What is your go-to approach for child therapy?

My go-to approach for helping kids in child therapy is CBT or play therapy. I prefer this approach because it allows children to express themselves in a natural, non-threatening way through play, which can help them communicate thoughts and feelings they may not be able to articulate verbally. Additionally, CBT helps children identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors, providing them with practical skills to manage emotions and cope with challenges

What tools do you teach in child therapy?

I teach the following tools in child therapy: art therapy, play therapy, CBT, mindfulness and relaxation, social skills training, and behavioral skills.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in child therapy when symptoms begin to reduce.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement child therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in child therapy by implementing tools learned in sessions.

What should someone do to prepare for starting child therapy?

To prepare for their first child therapy session, a parent can explain therapy as something that is fun to their child.

Starting Child therapy

What is child therapy?

Child therapy, also known as counseling for kids, helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst kids include behavioral issues, trauma, bullying, depression, and anxiety. All ages of children can attend and benefit from child therapy at Thriveworks Austin.

How does child therapy work?

Child therapy works by using multiple techniques tailored to fit the child’s needs based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve play therapy for younger kids or cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks child therapists in Austin, TX have the expertise and experience to help kids at their level.

Play therapy vs. child therapy

Child therapy is a type of therapy meant for clients within a specific age group, while play therapy is an approach to therapy that helps children with self-expression and stress relief, among others. Play therapy is a technique that is often used in child therapy to help children express what’s running through their minds when they do not have the words to express their thoughts and emotions. It can get children to express what’s wrong, what might be causing unwanted behaviors, or what they might need in a way that is accessible to them so that therapists can then work to treat the issue.

How to tell if my child needs counseling

It’s not always obvious when a child should see a therapist for their behavior, though in the midst of challenges like divorce, loss, bullying, and other mental health conditions, it’s often a good idea to seek it out. Common behaviors that can indicate a need for child therapy include separation anxiety, bedwetting (at inappropriate ages), and agitation/excessive irritability — especially if it reaches a point of physical violence.

What type of therapy is best for children?

Cognitive behavioral therapy at Thriveworks in Austin, TX is one of the best types of therapy for children. However, it can be administered in child therapy sessions in a variety of ways that are more accessible to young minds, such as play therapy.

Is child therapy conducted in person or online?

Child therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and online by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does child therapy last?

The length of child therapy depends on your child’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, child therapy sessions will last for several months.

How much does child therapy cost?

At Thriveworks, we accept most major insurance plans, allowing many clients to pay as little as $0–$50 per session with their co-pay. We also offer self-pay options for those out-of-network or without insurance. Self-pay rates for talk therapy range from $160 to $240 for intake sessions and $135 to $195 for follow-ups, depending on your state. For psychiatry services, self-pay intake sessions are $255–$375, with follow-ups ranging from $175–$300, also varying by state. Availability, knowledge and expertise. They all seem to have the ability to listen and advise. My only criticism is that counseling is not accessible to me in a period of crisis.

I feel that my clinician is truly listening and processing the things I say. I appreciate the feedback/tools I have received thus far. I do not feel any sort of judgment or misinterpretation of what I am expressing. Claire is phenomenal!

It felt great to get some of the things that were stewing in my head out to someone. As women we tend to take a lot. Gay is a very nice woman. I think I may have needed someone a little younger. We had good conversations but remembering me as a person was a struggle. Maybe it's the work load. I haven't been able to vent to anyone in a long time so it felt great to do that. I think if I seek therapy in the future that I would prefer if the work load wasn't as hard on the therapist. I do feel like the therapy was a lot of things I already knew due to past experiences. It would be nice to have therapy sessions with people who can somewhat remember our past conversations. Again Gay is a great person and tried to help me to the best of her abilities. She is a great senior therapist and could help some folks that may not know the strategies for combating stress and anxiety. I do not regret reaching out

I needed someone who was strong, kind, listened and was action oriented who had the experience to deal with the trauma I was struck with when I experienced severe loss of a loved one in 2016. Linda was and is present, intelligent, professional, human, warm and kind and at every session she has offered me practical solutions to face my life and my day to day activities. I highly recommend her. She Is so good it is very hard to get an appointment with her but if you can get one keep it. She is fabulous and will heal your spirit and soul in a safe and loving place. I love her strength more than anything and her optimism that anyone can get to a better place and not be stuck in pain and hopelessness. She is healing my heart and I feel like I have found a person who truly cares. This is a very good place.

I am gonna cry as I write this review... I have been working with Linda M. since I was married to my abusive ex husband and through my single time and my time meeting and marrying my current very wonderful husband. She has pushed me to be the very best person I can be and literally saved my life on several occasions. I'm moving to VA so I can't see Linda anymore and I'm telling you, this is my hardest goodbye. This woman is beyond amazing. She has forced me to take a good hard look at myself and work on everything: anxiety, borderline and PTSD to make me be a better person. You CANNOT go wrong with Linda. It's amazing how much one person and one session can change your life. I've tried therapy before, many times, with no luck until I got dragged to Thriveworks by someone close to me who wanted therapy to fix me! Well it didn't "fix me" it made me a totally new person. A happier, more confident person willing to take on the world. I even wanted Linda to come to my wedding, but knew she couldn't as she is very professional and this is against policy. But I would have had her there in a heart beat!
