My go-to approach for helping people in grief & loss counseling is to use empathy, allowing the client to tell the story of their loss in detail. I find it best benefit in validating a clients grief because it shows their grief is seen and acknowledged.
I teach the following tools in grief & loss counseling: how to begin a healthy grieving process around their loss, developing an awareness of how the avoidance of grieving has affected their life, and assisting the client in identifying the states of grief they are experiencing or have experienced.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when they report decreased time spent focusing on the loss and have engaged in healthy acts of comfort.
Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling with grief journaling and writing letters to their deceased loved ones.
To prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, an individual can simply show up for themselves in therapy.

You’ve probably heard the words “grief”, “bereavement”, “mourning” and “loss” used to describe the death of a loved one. While they are often used interchangeably and can overlap, they are different.
There is no right or wrong way to grieve. There is no set amount of time. Grieving is a deeply personal experience. Healthy grieving tends to follow a predictable pattern. Each stage moves the person through an important part of the process and towards a place of peace and acceptance.
People experience all of the stages but not always in order. They may spend more time on one than another. They may break the pattern and go back and forth many times before coming to a place of acceptance.
Sometimes no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get past those intense feelings. Grief can become overwhelming and distressing, making it difficult to move forward.
