My go-to approach for helping people in teen counseling is integrating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques with a person-centered approach. I prefer this approach because it combines evidence-based strategies with a supportive and empathetic therapeutic relationship. In teen counseling, I find that CBT provides practical tools for addressing specific challenges such as managing stress, anxiety, or depression. By helping teens identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, CBT empowers them to develop healthier coping mechanisms and problem-solving skills.
I teach the following tools in teen counseling: cognitive restructuring, mindfulness techniques, stress management strategies, emotional regulation skills, social skills training, behavioral activation, and problem-solving skills. These tools are tailored to meet the individual needs and goals of each teen client, empowering them to develop skills for managing emotions, navigating relationships, and coping with life's challenges effectively.
Clients will show a reduction of symptoms related to their diagnosis, whether in how frequently these symptoms show up or having fewer symptoms. They will also have a toolbox filled with ways to combat thinking errors.
Clients can supplement their time in teen counseling with activities such as journaling, practicing mindfulness, engaging in self-care activities, setting personal goals, reading self-help resources, and practicing coping strategies learned in sessions.
To prepare for their first teen counseling session, a teen can reflect on their feelings and thoughts, jot down any questions or concerns they have, and think about what they hope to achieve through counseling.
Teen counseling helps young individuals better understand and manage the challenges that affect their mental health. Common challenges amongst teens include anxiety, depression, ADHD, and problematic relationships with food.
Teen counseling works by using multiple techniques, tailored to fit the teen’s unique needs — based on their age group, their challenges, and the severity of their challenges. It might involve cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, art therapy, and others for varying ages. In any case, Thriveworks teen therapists in Austin have the expertise and experience to help young individuals at their level.
Signs that teens might need Teen counseling can be very subjective, as they are experiencing many changes and can have intense reactions to them. As parents, you know your child best and are best equipped to judge whether certain reactions are standard behaviors for your teen or whether they might be hinting at a larger problem. Even so, there are a few common signs and events that often point to a need for therapy, such as experiencing divorce or loss, grief, consistent low moods, teens distancing themselves and becoming isolated, losing interest in hobbies, excessive anger or irritability, substance use issues, and suicidal ideation, among others.
Teen counseling providers at Thriveworks in Austin, TX offer both in person and online therapy by video. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
The length of teen counseling depends on your teen’s needs as well as the goals that you and their therapist might have for them. Generally, teen counseling sessions will last for several months.
Slammed doors, screaming, late nights; these are all too common scenes in households around the country. Parents fighting with their teenagers is very common; we see it on television and movies constantly. However, there is another level of discord that becomes so disruptive to the entire family, and so worrisome for parents, that professional help is needed. At Thriveworks Austin, we have counseling available for teens and their parents.
Perhaps you have the opposite problem. Your once talkative and happy child has become a distant and withdrawn teenager. While this is also common in adolescence, it can be troublesome as well. You may have concerns about what your teenager is doing in their free time, how school is going, and just how they are feeling, but be unable to get any answers. We can help bridge the gap of communication between you and your child. Your teenager may find it a welcome relief to have an impartial mediator to talk to about their feelings and emotions.
There are many temptations and scary situations in the world for teenagers today. We can help you navigate the waters of growing up. It is not a smooth road for many, and spending time with a counselor can be healthy for your teenager’s emotional and psychological health, as well as for your relationship. We have appointments available for new clients within 24 hours.
