My go-to approach for helping people in grief and loss counseling is talk therapy. I prefer to allow the client to tell me all about what they are grieving—the death of a spouse, family member, loved pet, job, or moving. I enjoy encouraging the client to share happy memories if the grief is about death and dying, or the situation they lost their job, or the reasons they have to move, or whatever it is they feel grief over. I find the best benefit of allowing the client to tell me about their loss is that they know that sharing their memories of the thing they cared about with me means that someone else now knows about it.
I teach the following tools in grief & loss counseling:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when they start the session sharing about how they had a social interaction they had been hesitant about doing, or sharing how they were able to let go of items belonging to the loved one, or began looking for a replacement activity to the job (either a new job or retirement activities).
Clients can supplement their time in grief & loss counseling by journaling their feelings, talking with friends and family about other topics, getting outside in good weather, and reading appropriate supplemental literature.
To prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, an individual should have a box of tissues available and understand they will need to tell their story about the loss and what it is they are grieving, along with having a goal to work towards in counseling.

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.
There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.
