As a clinician with 22 years of experience in the mental health field, I understand the unique issues of clients with different personal, ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
Catherine Roberts is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 22 years of experience in the mental health field. She understands the unique issues of clients with different personal, ethnic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
Catherine enjoys working with clients who are experiencing self-identity, interpersonal relational issues that affect their job and family dynamics. This is her ideal type of client to work with because there is a lot of self-exploration the client will need to work on first. Some of the issues that will come up are self-loathing, lack of esteem, shame, and poor self-image. As a clinician, Catherine provides them support and total acceptance. When the client can begin to embrace and accept who they are without judgment, they can begin to work on how they relate to other people in all areas of their life. This can be done slowly and one step at a time. The pace is usually set by the client and how they progress along in treatment as they embrace each stage of their new self.
Catherine began her career in the mental health field as a therapist in an inpatient facility, responsible for the patient's ongoing clinical progress while at the hospital. Her patients varied in ages from 10 to 12-year-old children, to 13 to 17-year-old adolescents, to 18 to 55-year-old adults, and seniors who were in crisis. She worked with patients who were diagnosed with Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Anxiety, Major Depression, Obsessive Impulsive Disorder, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Mood Disorder, Alcohol/Drug Dependency, Conduct Disorder, and Sleep disorder, just to name a few.
Catherine really enjoys getting to know people while working with them on their unique concerns. She offers a very supportive and client-centered environment to therapy, and she loves helping clients move toward their goals by being a partner in their journey towards a renewed self and clinically appropriate treatment. She enjoys working with clients and assigning them research-based homework activities to help them work independently on areas of concerns outside of the sessions. Her areas of specialty include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, motivational interviewing, interpersonal therapy, and other researched based therapeutic approaches that are appropriate to treatment.

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.
Thriveworks family therapists in Woodstock, GA usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.
The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.
This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.
In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.
Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.
Thriveworks therapists in Woodstock, GA offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.
It’s said that the most impactful people in your life are the 5 people you spend the most time with. Of course, this could mean your friends, roommates, or even coworkers. However, Thriveworks Woodstock wagers at least some of those spots are filled with your family.
Our families teach us a lot—how to communicate, problem solve, and display love, just to name a few. These are hefty lessons to come from the same people, and the weight of that can push down heavily on families.
If your family isn’t teaching the messages you want it to, it’s okay. It’s never too late to change. Plus, family stress is something every family deals with. There’s not a family out there who hasn’t in some way hurt each other, argued way past bedtimes, or accidentally encouraged the development of bad habits. Families are chaos! But they are also beautiful. Love and positive growth can take place in your family. Thriveworks Woodstock is here to help you get there.
The Family Therapists at Thriveworks Woodstock support families of all structure. Whether you are a part of a biological, adopted, foster, or step family, you all deserve to spend fruitful and loving time together. A perfect family doesn’t exist, but together, we can heal any fissures and start you on a path of heal and love.
Life often doesn’t go the way we want. Curveballs and seemingly insurmountable mountains arise at the most inopportune moments. Most of these are completely out of your control, and yet are the source of heartache in many families.
Thriveworks Woodstock Therapists understand that being a family means living with uncertainty, anxiety, and of course, love. We have years of training and experience that have helped families like yours sort through all the bad and come out with the good.
In a family therapy session with Thriveworks Woodstock, you can expect to work through prominent and immediate problems, improve communication and problem-solving skills, and implement plans to prevent future conflict.
But what about the specifics? Family therapy is a broad topic, and it’s that way on purpose. Every family and situation are unique, and so is the counseling process.
For some families, meeting individually before a group session is better suited for their needs. Others are ready to jump right in. How a session functions will also depend on the Thriveworks Woodstock counselor. If you are curious about individual counselors and what they can offer, give us a call today.
A few of the focuses a family therapy session might have include:
Family therapy is about rebuilding and strengthening. It is not a show of weakness that you are seeking help through counseling. Usually it is a show of your strength, courage, and commitment towards each other.
