My go-to approach for helping people in our medication check-ins is review compliance, review medication side effects, and then review the signs and symptoms that were the chief complaint during initial intake. I find the most benefit in utilizing open ended questioning because I get clients to open up more.
My approach to medication management is to start at a lower dose to minimize side effects and encourage compliance.
I know my client is making meaningful progress in our session when they give me positive feedback. When they inform me that I will be taking this medication as prescribed because you have changed my life. I will also know that they are making meaningful progress by reporting absence of signs and symptoms impairing functioning.
Client typically may benefit from complementary activities like Yoga, meditation and physical exercise to supplement medication management.
To prepare for the first session, a client should find a private place and set up their electronics and make sure everything is functioning. This will eliminate any anxiety that may compromise the intake process.
