My go-to approach for helping people in our medication check-in is to catch up on how things have been since the last appointment, covering areas such as home, therapy, work, and life in general. I find the greatest benefit in listening to my patients talk about things going on in their lives and assisting them in finding ways to approach these situations before just jumping in and discussing medications.

What is your typical approach to prescribing medications?

When prescribing medication, I have always strived for the âstart low and go slowâ method because this has proven over time to be a better way to allow the patient to adjust to the medication. This method gives them time to identify ways the medication has helped or caused side effects before the dose becomes too high.

Do you teach clients any therapeutic tools in sessions?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when they identify areas of improvement within themselves, are setting boundaries and routines to help themselves improve, and they have been taking care of themselves.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement psychiatric treatment?

Clients can supplement the treatment by focusing on alternatives to medication and therapy which include walking outside to improve happiness and decrease levels of anxiety and stress, connecting with others, and utilizing exercise.

What should someone do to prepare for starting psychiatric care?

To prepare for the first session clients should gather essential information and be ready to share any prior diagnosis, symptoms and a summary of current and past medication regimens (including doses, time periods taken and side effects).
