FAQs about divalproex sodium (Depakote)

What is divalproex sodium (Depakote) used for?

Divalproex sodium (Depakote) is FDA-approved for bipolar disorder, some types of seizure disorders (epilepsy), and prevention of migraines. It’s sometimes used off-label for status epilepticus and diabetic peripheral neuropathy (nerve pain).

Does Depakote cause weight gain?

While weight gain and weight loss are both possible with Depakote, weight gain is much more common. Weight gain also tends to increase with higher doses, which is one reason providers aim for the lowest dose that controls your symptoms. Talk to your provider if you’re concerned about weight gain after starting Depakote.

Is divalproex sodium (Depakote) a controlled substance?

No, divalproex sodium (Depakote) is not a controlled substance. That means the DEA doesn’t currently classify it as having abuse potential.

Does divalproex sodium (Depakote) make you sleepy?

Yes, divalproex sodium (Depakote) can make you sleepy. It’s one of the most common side effects of the medication. In clinical trials, around one in four people taking Depakote experienced drowsiness, compared to around one in seven people taking placebo.

What are the side effects of divalproex sodium (Depakote)?

The most common side effects of divalproex sodium (Depakote) are nausea or vomiting, drowsiness, dizziness, tremor, headache, and blurred or double vision. Weight gain is also common, and some people notice hair thinning.

Less commonly, Depakote can cause severe liver damage. This is most likely in the first six months and in young children. It can also trigger pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), lower platelet levels (which affects blood clotting), and lead to a toxic buildup of ammonia in the blood. Depakote is not generally recommended if you are pregnant or considering becoming pregnant.

Talk to your provider about any side effects that concern you.

How long does divalproex sodium (Depakote) take to work?

Divalproex sodium (Depakote) generally works quickly. For acute mania, a study of hospitalized patients found those taking divalproex showed significantly more improvement than those on placebo by day five. Other studies have found that it can take effect within one to four days.

That said, “starting to work” isn’t the same as full effect, which tends to take longer. It also depends partly on reaching the right level of medication in your blood. That’s one reason why your provider may check your blood levels of Depakote. The timeline may also be different for seizures and for migraine prevention.

Can I get a prescription for divalproex sodium (Depakote) online?

Yes, you can often get a prescription online if your provider decides it’s clinically appropriate. If divalproex sodium is a good fit, your provider can send the prescription straight to your local pharmacy.

Yes, Thriveworks accepts more than 360 insurance plans and most cover psychiatric services. You can check your coverage before booking, with no commitment required.

If you’re prescribed medication, whether that’s covered depends on your specific insurance plan.
