My go-to approaches for treating depression are CBT, psychoeducation, and person-centered therapy. It is important to validate clients' feelings, but it is also important to teach what depression is like, chemically, in our body and how to boost mood organically or with the help of medication (if needed). Clients additionally benefit from learning the power of their thoughts and how they can dictate/control how they are feeling.
Tools learned in depression counseling are learning how to make small goals, being kind to oneself, being okay/learning how to ask for help, implementing self-care, and potentially scheduling more social outings. If needed, any harm reduction approaches are implemented in the case of self-harm on top of depression symptoms.
