What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

Before going into an approach that applies more change and correction for anxiety, I first like to provide a lot of psychoeducation about how that occurs, as well as the control we have on what we think and how it impacts how we feel and behave. I also teach coping skills to try—in particular, grounding techniques and those that involve altering our senses. I may alter between person-centered therapy and CBT to both validate clients' fears, teach them where the line is between normal and extreme fear, and how to challenge oneself when crossing that line.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

I teach a lot of grounding techniques to help someone focus on the here and the now, especially with anxiety/panic attacks. I additionally teach coping skills that may not have been considered and emphasize using your senses, such as introducing cold or sour food (taste) to help during a heightened experience.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I know a client is making progress when they self-report reduced anxiety, if they complete the assessment scale and there is a decreased level/number scored, and I observe how they are thinking/processing their stressors.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can practice the techniques taught in sessions such as coping skills, challenging thoughts, and/or taking medicine if they are on it. In addition, having sufficient rest and a balance of self-care also helps reduce overall stress, which helps keep anxiety at a baseline state.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

To prepare for anxiety therapy, please be willing to be open to all things! We may want you to try new approaches and techniques to see if they help reduce the intensity of your symptoms, so please follow through with practicing at home.
