My go-to approach for helping people in couples counseling is getting both partners to recognize ways therapy can help them grow individually to strengthen the relationship as a couple.
I teach the following tools in couples counseling. They are as follows: healthy communication exercises, mirroring techniques, how to hold a family meeting, and how to put yourself in the other partner's position.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in couples counseling when each partner begins to see ways they approach the other partner that do not promote growth in the relationship.
Clients can supplement their time in couples counseling by identifying a hobby they can participate in together.
To prepare for your first couples counseling session, you can each make a list of things you would like to see different in the relationship.
