What is your go-to approach for anxiety therapy?

When working with individuals who are experiencing anxiety, my go-to approach is acceptance and commitment therapy. I prefer this approach because it is focused on helping the individual accept their natural emotional experiences and respond to them in a way that does not prevent them from working toward their life goals.

What tools do you teach in anxiety therapy?

A few of the skills that I teach in anxiety therapy include:

  • Mindfulness skills: These skills help individuals identify what emotions they are experiencing and how those emotions are experienced in their bodies. Additionally, these skills help individuals respond to these emotions and experiences in a positive manner.
  • Value-based actions: In this skill, I help clients identify what values are most important to them as individuals and work with them to develop plans to increase actions related to these values in their daily routines.
  • Evaluating and responding to thoughts: This skill helps clients to recognize the impact that their thoughts have on their emotional state, identify what value the thoughts have for them, and respond to those thoughts in a way that promotes their personal values.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy?

I often find that a person is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy when they are able to identify, accept, and respond to their thoughts and emotions in sessions and they are able to maintain routines that promote positive mental health and individual values while experiencing anxious symptoms in their daily life.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement anxiety therapy?

Clients can best supplement their time in anxiety therapy by setting aside time between sessions for reflection and time to practice the skills discussed in the session. This can include practicing mindfulness skills, relaxation skills, and reflective journaling.

What should someone do to prepare for starting anxiety therapy?

If someone is considering starting anxiety therapy, I would encourage them to reflect on the following questions prior to their first session:

  • What are some of the thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations that I experience when I feel anxious?
  • What are some of the ways that my anxious symptoms have impacted my daily life?
  • What values are most important in my life and what goals do I have for my life?
Therapy is a safe place to start your journey of understanding your anxious symptoms, and responding to them in a way that helps you work toward the life you have always imagined for yourself.

Starting Anxiety therapy

What is anxiety therapy?

Anxiety therapy helps people better understand and manage their anxiety. Anxiety therapists at Thriveworks in Raleigh, NC can develop a treatment plan that will help you better manage your day-to-day anxiety or your anxiety disorder.

How does anxiety therapy work?

Anxiety therapy involves talking to a therapist about symptoms, potential causes, and more. Thriveworks Raleigh therapists will then work with you to determine where your anxiety might stem from and teach you effective coping mechanisms.

How to deal with anxiety?

One of the best ways to deal with anxiety is to learn about your own anxiety: your symptoms, what triggers it, and what coping mechanisms have been effective in the past. When you learn what your anxiety is tied to, it can help you be mindful of what’s really happening as well as prevent and mitigate symptoms by processing and working through the issue in therapy. Other strategies that have been shown to help manage anxiety are meditation, challenging anxious thoughts, exercising, and journaling.

Symptoms of anxiety

Common symptoms of anxiety include:

  • Sense of impending danger
  • Nervousness/restlessness
  • Trouble focusing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Shaking
  • Headaches
  • Stomach issues
  • Fatigue
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased heart rate

What is the best therapy for anxiety?

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can be incredibly effective in treating anxiety and anxiety disorders. Other effective techniques include exposure therapy, Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and EMDR therapy.

Is anxiety therapy conducted in person or online?

Anxiety therapy is conducted both in person and online, depending on the individual’s preferences and their therapist’s availability. We suggest choosing the option that best suits your needs.

How long does anxiety therapy last?

On average, people can tend to attend 15 to 20 session of anxiety therapy (five or more months). However, this number is heavily dependent on the type of anxiety that’s being treated and its severity, with many choosing to attend anxiety therapy for a longer period of time to ensure its effectiveness long-term.

Is therapy worth it for anxiety?

Yes, it is worth going to therapy for anxiety. If you are struggling with regular anxious thoughts and feelings that are affecting your day-to-day life or you suspect that you have an anxiety disorder, you should seek expert anxiety help.

Need more help deciding?

Anxiety can leave you feeling overwhelmed, worried, and unsettled. It’s essential to pay attention to any anxiety symptoms you might have so that you can get professional help sooner rather than later. The longer you put off getting the help you need, the worse your symptoms might get.

Anxiety is a serious mental disorder that can benefit from a mental health professional’s assessment. At Thriveworks Counseling in Northeast Raleigh, NC, our anxiety therapists are readily available and can get started with you as soon as tomorrow. What Does Anxiety Look and Feel Like?

As we touched on earlier, anxiety can make you feel overwhelmed and unsettled. You might develop anxiety after going through a traumatic event or out of the blue. Regardless, it’s essential to understand the symptoms and recognize when you are feeling anxious. Common symptoms include:

  • Excessive worry
  • Restlessness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Changes in sleeping habits
  • Changes in appetite
  • Excessive sweating
  • Feeling of impending doom

This list doesn’t encompass every sign or symptom that may come with anxiety. However, these are some of the most common.
