My go-to approach for helping people in PTSD/trauma therapy is, first off, validating their experience and normalizing their emotions. I help clients understand that their responses to their trauma are often coping skills that are self-protective, despite them sometimes not being healthy or helpful coping skills. My approach is to teach new and more helpful coping skills while we process the trauma.
I teach the following tools in PTSD/trauma therapy: challenging negative thoughts, grounding exercises, mindfulness, CBT techniques, and self-care to name a few.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in PTSD/trauma therapy when the client reports fewer episodes of anxiety, flashbacks, and depression and improved overall moods. When clients report the use of healthier coping skills, it is an indication of improvement.
Clients can supplement their time in PTSD/trauma therapy by making a commitment to the work discussed in therapy, practicing the new skills, possibly attending peer support groups.
To prepare for their first PTSD/trauma therapy session, someone can be open and honest about their experiences. If sessions are to be on Zoom, check internet speed, have a place that is safe and private, and plan not to be driving.

If a client is working through a single traumatic event that occurred as an adult, trauma or PTSD therapy may only take a few months, but in general, it can take a year or more to effectively treat trauma symptoms and PTSD. The duration of treatment is highly dependent on the client and the severity of their symptoms.
The success rate of therapy for PTSD depends entirely on the individual’s symptoms, commitment to attending sessions, and personal abilities.
