My go-to approach for treating both anxiety and depression is solution-focused brief therapy. I prefer solution-focused brief therapy for anxiety treatment because clients are asked to draw on their past successes, strengths, and resources to create their desired future. It can also be especially helpful for individuals struggling with depression because it emphasizes collaboration, strengths, and progress. I appreciate the respect this method has for clients, that it is non-judgmental and compassionate. I have also seen the effectiveness of a positive approach.
In both anxiety therapy and depression counseling, I help you develop tools and skills, based on your current strengths, that you can use moving forward. These tools and skills may help you:
I know a client is making meaningful progress in anxiety therapy or depression counseling when they develop healthy coping strategies, come up with practical first steps forward, find relief from painful negative emotions, and in some cases relieve related issues such as difficulty sleeping or traumatic flashbacks. A client also is making meaningful progress when they are experiencing hope and optimism.
Clients can supplement their time in anxiety therapy or depression counseling by keeping an eye out for moments when their problems are less present or gone altogether. The client can then identify what is different about these times, and do more of what is already working. The client can identify:
To prepare for their anxiety therapy or depression counseling session, an individual can reflect on these questions: From the time you set up this visit to today, what have you noticed that’s already slightly improving? If you have done therapy before, what worked best for you? You can also think about your goals for therapy. What would you like to be different in your life as a result of the therapy? Don't forget to bring a list of your current medications.

Everyone could name their own experiences with this occasional anxiety. However, for some, this occasional anxiety becomes persistent or out-of-control anxiety. That’s when anxiety becomes a problem that you must pay attention to.
There are many different anxiety disorders out there from generalized anxiety (which is the most prevalent form of anxiety) to posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and more. These disorders have their own criteria and symptoms, but they all share this persistent or out-of-control anxiety that intrudes on the individual’s life. Here’s a longer, more comprehensive list of anxiety disorders:

Nobody is exempt from feeling sad, down, or upset from time to time. We all encounter challenges or circumstances that can send us into these negative emotions. For example, we might feel sad after moving away from our friends and family; we might feel down after getting into an argument with our partner; we might feel upset after getting into it with a coworker. Depression, though, is despair on a much larger or deeper scale.
Those with depression struggle to focus on anything but their feelings of sadness and hopelessness. They also face a range of other harmful or tough symptoms, like:
As you can tell from these symptoms, depression is a really harsh illness. It can flip your life upside down and make every aspect of it unenjoyable. As with anxiety, if you start to feel depressed or begin to develop symptoms of depression, it’s crucial that you talk to a professional.
Thriveworks Counseling has experts who specialize in evaluating and diagnosing depression as well as developing an effective treatment plan for these individuals. We can set you up with one of these therapists or psychologists at our Maitland, FL office today.
