What is your go-to approach for family therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in family therapy is solution focused brief therapy. I prefer solution focused brief therapy because with SFBT families are asked to draw on their past successes, strengths, and resources to create their desired future. I have seen the effectiveness of a positive approach.

What tools do you teach in family therapy?

In family therapy with solution focused brief therapy, I help you develop tools and skills, based on your current strengths, that you can use moving forward. These tools and skills may help you:

  • change harmful behaviors
  • achieve your life goals
  • manage difficult situations

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when they see themselves and their family as capable, strong, and wise. A client also is making meaningful progress when they can see a way toward their goals or begin taking action toward their goals. Most of all, I know a client is making meaningful progress in family therapy when they are experiencing hope. With family therapy, change can often be seen directly in the therapy sessions.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement family therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in family therapy with keeping an eye out for when their problems are less present or gone altogether. The family can then identify what is different about these times, and do more of what is already working. Each client can “catch your family member doing something right” and thank them.

What should someone do to prepare for starting family therapy?

To prepare for their first family therapy session, an individual can think about what is bringing them to therapy. Why now? If you have done therapy before, what worked best for you? What are your hopes and fears about therapy? You can also think about your goals for therapy. What would you like to be different in your family as a result of the therapy? Don't forget to bring a list of your current medications.

Starting Family therapy

What is family therapy?

Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.

How does family therapy work?

Thriveworks family therapists in Maitland, FL usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.

What is the most effective family therapy?

The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.

How do I know if my family needs therapy?

This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.

What is included in family therapy?

In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.

What is the success rate of family therapy?

Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.

Is family therapy conducted in person or online?

Thriveworks therapists in Maitland, FL offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does family therapy last?

Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.

Need more help deciding?

“Family” can mean a lot of different things, but from a general standpoint, family refers to a group of people related by blood/ancestry. Some people are lucky to have close, loving relationships with their family members, but others aren’t so lucky. That said, regardless of which side of the aisle you are on, your family can have a major effect on how your life unfolds.

Consider Alexandra: She’s never been particularly close to her loved ones. Her views and style have always differed, which seemed to drive a wedge between her and her parents. When Alexandra turned 18, she moved out and never returned. Today, she talks to her parents a few times a year, but that’s the extent of their relationship. She loves them, without a doubt. “Is there room for more growth and love there?” she wonders. Still, she harbors some resentment toward them, as she’s made a habit of keeping to herself and isolating herself from others.

Alexandra doesn’t have great relationships with her parents. She sees how her family history affects her today and wonders if it’s worth revisiting. Family therapy could help Alexandra and her parents talk about their rocky history; it could also help them build their relationships from the ground up. In summary, family therapy could help Alexandra’s family navigate difficult conversations, work through their problems, and improve their relationships with one another. If you think that your family could benefit from therapy, like Alexandra and her family, consider reaching out to Thriveworks Counseling in Maitland, FL. We can take care of you.

Who Is Family Therapy For? What Is It?

As we began to explain, family counseling is meant to help families work through their unique challenges and improve their relationships with one another. This form of therapy has the potential to help any family, but it might prove especially helpful to those who are facing a significant hurdle. For example:

  • Divorce and separation
  • Major life transitions, like a big move or new career
  • Behavioral problems in kids
  • Mental illness, such as depression, anxiety, or substance abuse
  • Conflicts and severe miscommunication

Family therapy could look different from one family to the next family. Why? Because every individual and every family is different! And when it comes to therapy, we need and deserve that personalized treatment that is designed with us in mind. Thriveworks Counseling in Maitland, FL is happy to offer that to families, individuals, and couples alike.

Family Therapy Techniques: How Does Family Therapy Work?

As we’ve just established, family therapy is designed on a case-by-case basis! That said, there are a few approaches to family therapy that are common and helpful. These include:

  • Structural family therapy: This approach to family counseling focuses on helping family members strengthen their foundation. The family therapist will observe how the family interacts and then based on these observations, work to help the family improve their relationships with one another.
  • Strategic family therapy: Strategic family therapy helps family members improve their means of communication. Often, with this method, family therapists will assign their clients with homework, which is specifically designed to guide them in assessing their relationships and what areas could be improved.
  • Systemic family therapy: Systemic family therapy concentrates on exploring the meaning behind the behaviors of family members. The family therapist will assist their clients in gaining a deeper understanding of their challenges, where those challenges stem from, and how the family can overcome them.

If you choose to pursue family therapy at Thriveworks Counseling in Maitland, FL, know that your family therapist will design a course of treatment with your needs, goals, and personal preferences in mind.

My online therapy is with my therapy provider Gabriel Oliver. Gabriel is a total gentlemen who allows me to feel comfortable to open up and express my issues freely. He is an excellent listener who pays close attention to the details I express. Not only is he empathetic and attentive to my feelings but he helps me feel like I am in a judgement free zone. Since he is such a kind and compassionate professional he has empowered me with much more strength to begin to make progress in my journey to heal from the stresses that have overwhelmed me. He asks really thought provoking questions & I was recently encouraged to do some soul searching which has enabled me to decide to make some positive changes in my situation after facing the realization that with his expertise he will assist me to move forward from a difficult time in my life in a profound way! I feel like i will finally have a chance to focus on making a brighter future and grow from the challenges I am still currently facing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As a Professional, she would be such an asset as she is brilliant, intelligent and has an abnormal photogenic memory! Her many good traits combined would make an ideal counselor, in my opinion!
