What is your go-to approach for individual therapy?

My approach to individual therapy is a mixture of the person-centered approach (Carl Rogers) and cognitive behavioral therapy (Beck). I find the benefit in this approach because it allows for the client to be heard and validated, and also be able to evaluate their actions, thoughts, and feelings. This in turn allows for a non-judgmental and warm therapeutic environment to explore topics within individual therapy.

What tools do you teach in individual therapy?

I typically teach the following tools in individual therapy:

  • Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy: This method involves bilateral movement of eyes, hands, or feet while you process traumatic memories to heal from these distressing memories.
  • Challenging negative core beliefs: Processing through negative limiting beliefs.
  • Examining cognitive distortions: Challenging negative thoughts and how to replace them.
  • Grounding skills: Building coping skills for overwhelming thoughts or emotions.
  • Communication skills: Working on how to better communicate thoughts, feelings, or needs to others.
  • Conflict resolution skills: Improving one's ability to resolve conflict with others.
  • Career exploration: Processing career interests and goals.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy?

When a client is making meaningful progress in individual therapy, I notice that our goals and objectives in our treatment plan are starting to be achieved. The client can also feel a sense of more control over their symptoms and an improvement in overall functioning. In addition, they can talk with me about if we need to change our approach to make sure that they are getting the most out of therapy.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement individual therapy?

Clients can do multiple things, including but not limited to exercise, reading educational books about therapy, reading books about individuals who have overcome adverse events, meeting with their primary care/nutritionist to optimize their health, starting/engaging in hobbies, getting connected in positive social communities, etc.

What should someone do to prepare for starting individual therapy?

In preparing for the first individual therapy session/intake, you can be ready for an information-gathering and get-to-know session as we discuss current symptoms and functioning, establish goals and objectives, and build a therapeutic relationship.

Starting Individual therapy in Lynchburg

What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, allows people to engage in private sessions with a skilled therapist, counselor, or psychologist. The core objective of individual therapy is to establish a secure and confidential setting where you can openly discuss whatever emotional, psychological, or behavioral challenges you face. Through these one-on-one sessions, the client and therapist work together to delve into, comprehend, and ultimately find solutions for the issues at hand in their life.

How does individual therapy work?

Individual therapy unfolds in a structured process, commencing with an initial assessment in which the therapist gathers essential information about your history, concerns, and objectives. Together, you and your therapist collaboratively establish specific, attainable goals for your sessions, which can encompass symptom alleviation, personal development, or finding solutions to particular challenges.

Can individual therapy help me?

Yes, individual therapy, also known as Individual therapy, at Thriveworks can help you to improve your mental health and overall quality of life.

Is individual therapy conducted in person or online?

Individual therapy at Thriveworks is conducted both in person and via Online therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.

How long does individual therapy last?

The duration of your individual therapy sessions will vary. The decision on the number and frequency of sessions is typically collaboratively determined by the client and therapist.

Tiffany is easy to talk to. She's fun and laid back but makes sure the time together is what I need it to be. The ease of Thriveworks has also been noteworthy. An email reminder of the meeting with the zoom link always shows up the day before and the morning of the appointment so you don't forget!
