What is your go-to approach for cognitive behavioral therapy?

My go-to approach for helping people in CBT is beginning with psychoeducation regarding the CBT triangle. I find the best benefit in beginning here (with building rapport) because the client will be able to build each session from this point. Beginning here is a building block.

What tools do you teach in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I teach the following tools in CBT therapy:

  • Psychoeducation
  • Cognitive restructuring
  • Coping skills training
  • Relaxation training
  • Exposure
The key components of CBT are psychoeducation about anxiety and feared situations, cognitive restructuring to address maladaptive thinking and learn coping skills and focused thinking, somatic management techniques (relaxation training), gradual and systematic exposure to feared situations, and behavioral activation.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in cognitive behavioral therapy?

I know a client is making meaningful progress when they begin to identify maladaptive beliefs and behaviors while beginning to restructure their feelings.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement cognitive behavioral therapy?

Clients can supplement their time in CBT by engaging in and applying what strategies they've learned in therapy independent of the therapy setting.

What should someone do to prepare for starting cognitive behavioral therapy?

To prepare for their first cognitive behavioral therapy session, an individual can identify what they need from the therapist, what challenges they are facing (such as anxiety), and remain open to the process. Restructuring is not an overnight process.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in Lynchburg, VA—Counseling

CBT is a therapeutic model that has been proven to help a variety of people facing a wide range of difficulties. Clinic research has shown that clients participating in CBT can sustain long-term and substantial changes because they focus upon what they can control within their lives: their own thoughts. Even when clients struggle with serious mental health problems such as anxiety and depression, many clients experienced measurable relief comparable to that of medication. CBT has been used as a treatment for…

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Insomnia
  • Anger management
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder
  • Drug and/or alcohol addiction
  • Relationship issues
  • Mood swings
  • Self-destructive habits
  • General health issues
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Child and adolescent issues

Thriveworks Lynchburg utilizes CBT with many clients because we have seen how effectively it can change someone’s life. Just as negative thinking can leave people hopeless and stuck, positive thinking can give them motivation to overcome even the biggest challenges they face.

Cognitive Distortions—A Root Problem

Negative thinking can cause big problems, but it is unfortunately a common phenomenon. Often, the first step in changing one’s thought patterns is recognizing them for what they are. Here are examples of a few of the most common cognitive distortion. Do you recognize any?

  • Polarized thinking puts the world into a black-or-white category. Everything is good/evil, right/wrong, awesome/awful.
  • Blaming means people find fault anywhere and everywhere they can—even when there should be no blame or when blame does not help the situation in any way.
  • Catastrophizing expects the worst possible outcome in every situation and negates any information that may suggest otherwise.
  • Overgeneralization takes one experience and imposes it upon others. As with Cindy, one bad night’s sleep does not mean she will not be able to rest another night.
  • Emotional reasoning mistakes internal feelings for external realities. Feeling guilty does not mean someone is actually guilty.
  • Fairness fallacy measures all of life by an arbitrary standard of fairness and in comparison to others.

Kim is the absolute best counselor! She is very kind and caring and adapts to whatever works best for you personally. She does not use the typical counselor answers or “by the book” responses. She talks to you like you are a real person. She always make me feel like the things that I am going through are important and the feelings are valid. She provides a completely judgement free zone to talk about anything that is needed. She understands that things take time and she does not force you to talk about anything. She allows you to process in your own time. She has a way of working with me that allows me to fully trust her. Kim has a heart of Gold! You can tell throughout your sessions with her that this is more than just a job for her. You feel legitimately cared for by her. You can tell that she genuinely wants to help you to move through the things that are holding you back in life. She’s very encouraging and reassuring. Her genuine compassion and encouragement helps me feel like I am actually important and deserving of growth. I would highly recommend Kim as your counselor if you are looking for someone who will make you feel valued and heard and not like you are just another name on their client list! She has definitely made a huge impact on my life!

Working with Dr. Tiffany Stephens has been so helpful! She is very approachable, easy to talk to, and genuinely cares about concerns and circumstances. She can help think through problems and works toward a better outlook and teaching real skills that help toward calmness and strength in the midst of complicated issues. She helps teach courage to be vulnerable in the moment, so I can learn patterns and work at replacing them with more healthy ones— her style of preparing clients to approach things differently makes all the difference when difficulty arises. I feel safe and confident (but not tight and overly-clinical) when talking with her. I absolutely recommend working with her if you are working toward a better you!

Bryan Hunsley has been a great help in providing counseling to myself and my husband! He begins our ZOOM sessions on time. Bryan is great at his job in that he is easy to talk to and nonjudgmental. His feedback is even tempered (appropriate, positive and welcoming), plus clear and easy to understand. My husband and I feel that Bryan provides sensitive care and treats us both with ultimate respect! He is flexible in that he can easily switch gears according to the urgency of our needs for any particular session and is quick to offer any needed support between sessions. He provides a professional high quality of care that is also relaxing and informative. I am more than satisfied with his services being provided and find myself looking forward to the next session! Bryan has and continues to strengthen our marital wellness with his superb counseling expertise!
