What is eating disorder therapy?

Eating disorder therapy is a specialized approach aimed at assisting those who are grappling with a range of eating disorders. These disorders are significant mental health conditions characterized by irregular or unhealthy eating patterns and an intense focus on body weight and shape. Common conditions addressed in Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID).

How does eating disorder therapy work?

At Thriveworks, Eating disorders begins with a thorough assessment and personalized treatment plan. Central to eating disorder therapy is psychotherapy, often employing cognitive behavioral therapy and other specialized techniques to target negative thought patterns.

Eating Disorders: Signs and Symptoms

There are many different kinds of eating disorders. Bulimia and anorexia may be the most recognizable, and The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) outlines signs and symptoms for each.

The DSM-5 defines anorexia as:

  • Feeling disgust about one’s own body—its size, shape, and weight.
  • Being incapable of accurately perceiving one’s body size, shape, and weight—seeing oneself as larger or heavier than one is in reality.
  • An irrational and intense fear of gaining weight. This fear fuels actions that undermine the maintenance of a healthy weight.
  • Restricting food and drink intake so that a below normal body weight is achieved (as compared to healthy standards for one’s developmental trajectory, sex, physical health, and age).

The DSM-5 defines bulimia as:

  • Repeated times of eating binges as defined by…
    • Losing control over what food and drink one consumes.
    • During a particular time, eating and drinking more than other people could consume during the same time.
  • Trying to compensate for these binges through unhealthy means of weight loss that may include misusing diuretics or laxatives, exercising constantly, frequently fasting, and causing oneself to vomit.
  • When one’s body shape and weight monopolize one’s self-image and one’s intellect, skills, personality are minimized.
