What is your go-to approach for couples/marriage counseling?

I love working with couples! I use a “team” approach that has actually helped me in my own 27-year marriage. When couples use the team approach, they learn to fight fair and make meaningful changes in their relationship.

What tools do you teach in couples/marriage counseling?

I teach couples how to use a strength-based approach to remember why they got together in the first place. I also teach positive communication and use role-play exercises to model healthy patterns of communication.

How do you know when a client is making meaningful progress in couples/marriage counseling?

I know that couples are making positive progress when they start to communicate as teammates rather than opponents.

What can clients do in their personal time to supplement couples/marriage counseling?

I always suggest date nights to help couples rekindle their love.

What should someone do to prepare for starting couples/marriage counseling?

Couples should prepare by adopting the belief that we are all on the same team.
