My approach to helping people cope with grief and loss is to begin by normalizing their pain. I find the best benefit in helping clients understand that they can use the principles taught to address any type of grief and loss. I believe an important part of therapy is helping clients understand that coping skills are transferable.
Here are some examples of topics I would focus on: 1. For clients with complicated grief responses, I would explore what they observed and internalized about grief growing up. 2. Understanding the purpose of emotions and how to validate feelings. 3. Using the five stages of grief and tasks of mourning models to help clients make sense of where they are in the healing process. 4. Identify and explore creative outlets clients use/prefer for expressing feelings (journaling, drawing, poetry, music). 5. Discussing how to overcome barriers to closure after someone has died.
I know when a client is making meaningful progress in grief & loss counseling when they report noticing a consistent decline in the maladaptive behaviors and thoughts that kept them stuck.
Clients can supplement their time in grief and & loss counseling with: 1. Identifying what is needed in areas that have been neglected (ex. nutrition, sleep, cleaning, responding to messages). 2. Implementing a mindful gratitude practice at the end of each day as a way of emptying and preparing for the next day's blessings. 3. Identifying and committing to doing at least one self-care activity on a regular basis.
To prepare for their first grief & loss counseling session, an individual can 1) leave enough time in your schedule to make it on time so you don't feel rushed, 2) bring something to write with if you like, and 3) expect to take the journey one day at a time.

If you have recently experienced an event like the death of a loved one, a breakup or divorce, the loss of a job, or another major life change, then you may want to seek grief and loss counseling. Grief can be caused by many experiences and events, so if you feel that you are having trouble moving on from a certain event or find that it is still impacting your life and functioning, grief and loss counseling can help you process it more effectively so that you can move on and once again find fulfillment and satisfaction in your life.
There are many counseling theories for treating grief, one of the most frequently used being the dual process model of grief which helps people acknowledge who or what they’ve lost through rumination while also adjusting to the new roles and identities that this loss has now placed on them. There are also many commonly used therapy approaches used in grief and loss counseling, including Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and traumatic grief therapy.
