In family therapy, my priority is to establish a comfortable and supportive environment that fosters a strong clinical relationship. I believe this partnership enables clients to leverage their individual strengths and capabilities effectively.
A range of tools, techniques, and resources is utilized during family therapy to support families. For example, I often share strategies for fostering healthy communication patterns among family members.
I recognize meaningful progress in therapy when families report improvements in issues identified during their initial intake. This demonstrates their successful application of therapeutic strategies to their daily lives.
To enhance the therapy experience, family members are encouraged to complete therapeutic homework and hold each other accountable for commitments made during sessions. This approach reinforces learning and fosters collective progress.
Before the intake session, I advise checking with your insurance company to understand your mental health benefits fully. The intake process includes discussing a variety of questions to understand your biological, psychological, and social factors, your reasons for seeking therapy, and your mental health goals. This helps determine if I am the right fit for your needs or if a referral to another professional is necessary.
Family therapy helps families resolve conflicts and strengthen their relationships. It is led by qualified mental health professionals like psychologists, licensed professional counselors (LPCs), and licensed clinical social workers (LCSWs) who have extensive training in family dynamics and group communication.
Thriveworks family therapists in Chesterfield, VA usually begin by asking what everyone’s goals are for family counseling. Family members may need help with very specific issues or with general relationship functioning. But there are three main purposes in family counseling: to educate, to counsel, and to strengthen. Thriveworks also offers online family therapy and in-person services, so you may all meet in an office together or join a video call from your home depending on everyone’s location and availability.
The most effective form of Family therapy will often depend on the family itself, as there are many types of family therapy for therapists to use as they see fit in order to best meet the needs of their clients. However, one of the most commonly used types of family therapy is structural family therapy (SFT). SFT focuses specifically on family dynamics and interactions, looking at how they shape the relationships and structure present in the family. It can be effectively used to treat a variety of concerns.
This answer often looks different to each family that starts family therapy. However, some signs that your family might need to consider family counseling include frequent fights or misunderstandings, constant tension, experiencing loss, behavioral issues, marital issues, divorce, and blended family issues, among others.
In family therapy, therapists will often start by asking questions and assessing individual and family dynamics. From there, they may employ therapeutic techniques such as structured family therapy, CBT, strategic family therapy, and more depending on the present concerns and conflicts. From there, a therapist will work to open lines of communication between family members and facilitate emotional healing and growth.
Family therapy can be incredibly successful, with some studies reporting a success rate of almost 90% for improving participants’ emotional and mental health, and around 66% for improving their physical health.
Thriveworks therapists in Chesterfield, VA offer both online family therapy and in-person family therapy. We encourage you to choose the option that works best for you.
Family therapy is usually short term and solution-focused, with most families accomplishing their goals in 12 sessions or fewer. However, it can also last for longer if the probles at hand are more complex — and that’s okay, too.
Family therapy is simply counseling for the whole family. Instead of a single family member experiencing a problem and seeking individual therapy, the family as a whole may be in distress, as in the example above. Or if one member is facing a problem, such as alcoholism, the entire family may seek counseling to learn how to best help that family member.
If you think you could benefit from family therapy, reach out to Thriveworks Chesterfield. Our family therapists are here to help and look forward to meeting you.
During family therapy, the participating members of the family come together with a counselor to discuss whatever difficulties they are facing. The therapist will help the family strengthen communication skills and identify barriers to good communication, including any underlying issues that have not been addressed. Most of the time all of the family members will attend, though there may be instances in which only certain members come to a session.
Most of the time, unpleasant episodes pass by and life returns to normal. For others, life as they once knew it spirals downward, causing situations and relationships to deteriorate still further. When life becomes intolerable, someone in the family might reach out and seek help from a counselor in Chesterfield. They may pursue the services of a family counseling service or a qualified family therapist. Quite often other family members are reluctant to join in, though most tend to partake eventually. When this happens, the disquiet has the potential to recede and the family can again embrace life together.
Thriveworks Chesterfield family therapy has a simple goal: to help family members improve communication and resolve conflicts. If your family is struggling, or just needs a little help coping with a particular situation, give us a call. We’ve worked with quite a few families in distress. They got back on track and so can your family.
The typical benchmark for determining when to seek counseling is true also in family counseling. If disruption is occurring regularly or is particularly traumatic, it is appropriate to seek professional help. Whether the impact is currently felt by the entire family or just a single member, family counseling can help.
For example, if one member of the family is alcoholic, the entire family may seek counseling to learn skills for helping the family member without enabling them. Or, a family member diagnosed with ADHD may result in the entire family attending counseling for a period of time. Family members may need help understanding the diagnosis and how it will impact their relationships, but they may also need help in learning how to support the family member. Or, as in the first example, perhaps a change in relationships, a new family member, or a major move have impacted the health of the entire family’s relationships.
Life is fluid insomuch as it’s always changing and presenting us with new challenges. For the most part, we adapt to whatever life throws our way and move ahead with the times. Unfortunately, changes and challenges can sometimes be too much to handle. This is especially so when negative changes materialize in us or our loved ones. Challenges that can prove disruptive to family life can include some of the following:
Whether or not you see your family’s specific situation on the list above, if you sense your family would benefit from seeing a therapist, give us a call. We can help your family define the problems it is facing and develop the skills to move through them.
Perhaps you and your family are at a place where there’s more disharmony in the home than harmony. If so, our therapists may be able to help reset your lives so that you can move back toward the light. Give us a call today, explore your options, and see how we may be able to assist.
