My go-to approach for helping people in depression therapy is to provide a comfortable, supportive environment where a strong clinical relationship can be built. It is my belief that through this partnership, clients are best able to draw on their individual strengths and capabilities.
A variety of tools, techniques, and resources are shared with clients with depressive symptoms. An example of a tool I would share with a client who is depressed would be self-compassion exercises to manage their symptoms, when they feel depressed.
I know a client is making meaningful progress in therapy when they share that they feel less depressed and their problems that led them to seek therapy are resolved to the point where their symptoms are easily managed.
Clients can supplement their time in therapy by completing their therapuetic homework, and identifying support systems and techniques that I've taught them that are helpful so that they can start implementing what they have learned.
I recommend contacting your insurance company to make sure you understand your mental health benefits before our intake. During your intake, we will be going over a variety of questions so I can get a snapshot picture of your biological, psychological, and social health, and then we will talk about what brings you in for therapy. This is also a good time to share with me your mental health goals. This information will help me identify if I am a good fit for you—if I am not, I can refer you to someone who can meet your mental health needs.
